Ok, so boring for some, but i'm thinking of changing my 57 plate Vectra Auto 1.9cdti, leather, satnav 150bph.
Had it 18 months with no problems at all, other than wear and tear.

Want something at least 18 months newer, similar size, possibly smaller (astra size), but with similar features.

Must haves:
Better economy
a/c
cruise control. (helps keep to speed limits ;))

Not bothered if it aint vauxhall, but have been offered an Insignia SRi 2.0 diesel 160bhp 09 plate.
Tax is £170 compared to the £250 i pay on the vectra. Sales guy reckons it will be cheaper on insurance cos its manual(?)
But will it be more economical, to the extent that the £60 extra per month it will cost me could be clawed back on fuel economy?

I drive a 13 mile journey to work, then back again, so 26 miles in approx. 40mph zones with intermittent traffic.
Twice a week on the m1 doing a round trip of about 130 miles each.
The vectra averages about 40mpg i'd say. Sales guy reckons the insignia will do 10mpg more than that. I'm not convinced.

What about other marques? Mondeo, S-max. Any others?
We're obviously budgeted, but let's say 2009 cars of similar spec to hte vectra is what i'm looking for.

Advice appreciated thanks.

Guy at work has just got an Insignia SRi to replace his Honda Accord Diesel. He hates it and much prefers the Honda.

I think the main thing is the way the Vauxhall engine delivers the power, there is nothing low down, so it means dropping down lots of gears to accelerate/get back up to speed.

I did borrow the car for a site visit recently, and i really noticed this when rolling onto an island at about 10mph in second gear, nothing happen when i tried to accelerate, had to drop down to first gear.

Also i don't think he is getting any more than 40-45mpg. I think the OBC was reading about 43mpg when i borrowed the car.

Can't offer any more info than that as i don't really know the car.

I honestly cannot see the point in changing it for something so similar. What is it going to do that your 18 month older one doesn't that makes it worth spending the money changing it?

Well, this is one of our dilemmas really.
I wouldn't say the vectra and insignia are that similar tbh. Sure the insignia replaced the vectra but inside, apart from the ' familiar vauxhall feel' it looks quite different.
I guess just the newer model and hopefully the reliability that you expect from a newer car.
We wanted to get into a system of changing the car every 2 years or so without building up a huge finance agreement.
If one doesn't come up that fits the bill then i won't change it. If, however, one does and its cost effective, then why not?

I just never trust car sales people. They've already ****** me over at Pentagon and i spent an hour typing a big long email complaint to them. Just awaiting a reply. A close friend is HR there and she'll be fighting my corner.

I actually quite like the 2008/9 Toyota Auris, if you get the SR version i think it is, it has the toyota motorsport kit on it and is reasonably well equipped inside. The 2.2 diesel with 180bhp is pretty damn nippy for a derv too!

oh god don't buy an insignia if your looking for reliability.

personally i'd say stick with your Vectra.

. Insignia imho was a step backwards from the Vectra

Is that even possible? The Insignia is better than the Vectra - though frankly most things are. Whether its worth changing a car for a similar car 18 months newer though is entirely debatable. Whats the point? Do you change your washing machine for a newer one 18 months newer with fundamentally the same featureset? No. So why do it with the car?

I prefer the Vectra to the Insignia but I wouldn't say the Vectra is a better car. They are pretty much mechanically the same, The Insignia seems a bit bigger but the smaller boot opening is a pain and the rear seat is awkward for car seats. The Vectra seems a bit more nimble compared to the Insignia which feels very heavy. The Vectra feels dated compared to the insignia and I feel is starting to show it's age now but I still prefer being in the Vectra. I'm not a big fan of newer cars having more lights and buttons than most star-ships.

Insignia drives better but has a lot more niggles than the vectra

Insignia is also a much nicer interior than the vectra

Basically insignia is a better car but filled with problems

Got 3 vectras and an insignia in the fleet

I agree with earlier posts... Going from a 57 plate Vectra to an 09 plate Insignia is a waste of time.. hang on to it a couple more years and then buy a newer car that makes it worthwhile.
