Hey guys,

Currently thinking about buying a second battery for my trip to New York in a few weeks.

I checked the price of the genuine Canon battery's and couldn't find one cheaper than £43 inc P&P..... which being a tight arse, couldn't bring myself round to clicking 'Add to basket' :D

So my question is, are there non gen' battery's that are just as good as OEM?

I've had a look on the bay of e and I've seen lots of cheap battery's for like £5.... but I'm unsure :-/

Thanks :-)

I've had a couple of ebay jobbies that were fine for a year or two then stopped charging, not bad for 7 quid though. I've now got a branded alternative and that seems much better than the ebay jobbie and was still less than half the Canon price.

Charger for the xxxDs is pretty dumb anyway, it should charge anything. You only have to be careful on the higher models with more intelligent batteries and chargers.

Just ordered a energizer battery, lens Hood, uv filter and new memory card in prep for my trip. cheers guys :-)

I've had several "copy" BP511A batteries for my Canon DSLRs (300D / 40D / 5D) and never had any trouble with them (except for one that stopped taking charge - and at £5ish, I wasn't to aggrieved about it). Can't tell any difference in perform between the compatibles and the Canon ones.

I've always got mine from the .com where you can shop 7 days.

Not so sure of how much an issue this is with other cameras, but with the recent Canon 5D mkiii firmware upgrade, it detected one of Canon LP-E6 batteries as being not genuine, and so doesn't offer full functionality anymore.

It was sold as an official Canon battery from an Amazon Marketplace seller. On close inspection, the label on the battery, while very similar is just slightly a different hue of blue and the manufacture date embossing is askew. Finally when you put it in the plastic covers that come with batteries, it rocks around slightly, rather than being a tight fit as they should be.

So its one thing to watch out for with non-official batteries, as it might not do all as expected in the camera.

I use the Duracell LP-E8's with my 600d. what doesn't work very well is the battery monitor basically it shows full until you get the warning message to change battery which is something to bear in mind :)

OK mate, only going to use it as a back up battery. Don't think I'll be rinsing two battery's per day.... well, I'm sure the Mrs will have something to say if I do Haha!
