Repointing (previously replacing a brick)

Well, I just fancied having a go since I have a bag of cement not really being used. Was good fun doing it. Need more practise to perfect the smoothing of the pointing.
You can use just sand with some water to practice. Then when it drys you can just rake it out again.

Im fairly sure thats what we used when I was training and we made some fairly big constructions and structures. Then once built and assessed it was all pulled down and the sand raked and brushed off back into the pile of dry sand, the same with the bricks.

Hi guys. I need to do some pointing around a few bricks. I looked for this thread to see how old my cement would be which appears to be 5 years. It's in a large plastic bag, much larger than I ever needed and it's been stored in my wood shed for the last 5 years. That's the last time I did any brick DIY, lol.

I haven't looked at it yet (I will this afternoon) but assuming it's dry and not been ruined by moisture, will it be ok or does it lose potency? I also have a large plastic bag of builders and and I'm hoping that's ok too.

Cement seems ok. I've used 4:1 with builders sand. I've chiseled out sections to repoint, sprayed water on and done one section so far. I've made a bit of pig's ear of it tbh, got mortar on the bricks. I'm finding pointing quite difficult to do, particularly getting it into the gaps without it touching the bricks.
I'm going to try lemon juice for the mortar staining and some white salt efflorescence on the bricks, according to this video it works well.

I've cleaned it up best I could. I guess it's ok and hopefully the mortar will get a bit lighter in colour. Main thing is, at least the wall is better protected now as we head into the wetter seasons. Hopefully I can do the other sections a bit better.

This is odd. I forgot about the first horizontal I did further up the wall. It's dried much lighter in colour than at the bottom section and I don't know why. But it's how I want the colour of all the pointing. I can't remember if I wet that bit of the wall and if that's the reason.

The one in my local merchant is just called high strength acid

Ah! :D Ok, I'll see what my local independent trade centre has. I ran the jointer a bit more across the pointing just now and some of it has gone lighter which is good. The very bottom lines are still dark but maybe they'll lighten as they dry more.
