Being a little new to tft monitors...still using crt at the moment, can someone please tell me what sort of reponse time you need for gaming, most monitors I see have 8ms, 5ms or 2ms...i've heard that 5ms is fine for gaming but 2ms is preferable, can anyone fill me in a little and tell me how important these response times are and if I could get away with an 8/5ms response time for current games when I upgrade in the next few weeks?

Well when they say 2ms / 5ms / 8ms its generally just marketing and not an exact response of that actual screen.

2ms usually indicates that its an overdriven tn-panel.

5ms + could mean pretty much any screen!

Your much better off using the search function and seeing what people think of the screens they've just bought in comparison to their previous old ones etc.

How important the response time is depends on what types of games you like playing also.

Pretty fast games, lots of action on screen, don't want any ghosting or anything like that, that's why i'm quite concerned about finding out about reponse time info before I go ahead and buy anything!

Trouble is you're not going to know how susceptible you are to noticing ghosting until you use an LCD. The majority of people are happy with 8 ms screens, even for fast games. Other people easily notice the slight ghosting on 2 ms screens.

You might think then it's better not to take a chance and just get a 2ms screen, but then that means getting a TN panel and you sacrifice viewing angles - the vertical viewing angles on TN means you get a different brightness at the top and bottom of the screen and the colour shifts as you move you head. So whatever you choose it is a bit of a compromise.

There was a big write up on AV Forums a while back.

Some manus claim 8ms and its same as others 20ms in testing, Toshiba for example.

It was said there was no real guidelines for the testing, some do it on rise of the pixel, others on the fall of the pixel and then other methods (all above me), but they will normally pick the fastest time for obv reasons.

They also reckon it would need be a negative number (not possible) by the way they measure to get it as fast as a high end CRT LOL. :p
