Report Tailgater Button

Idiotic and dangerous, too. No one is questioning that

The comment, and others in this thread, seem to put the onus on the car in front to move over.

Surely the emphasis should be that it is the idiot tailgating that should do something about it?

After all, it is easier to simply lift off the accelerator than pull over.

Perhaps, but which one are you in control of

Then you have to ask under what conditions is the tailgating happening. Yes its a safety issue but if the incident is happening on a dual carrigeway/motorway and the person in front is not overtaking, has no one in front of them and is not in the left most lane then the person in front is in the wrong and should have pulled into the left most lane.

So you're the one!! Tailgating isn't acceptable in that situation or any other. If someone is in your way then you wait patiently until it's safe to overtake!

I get your point, but that is exactly what I'm getting at. Why should the onus be on the car in front to pull over? I repeat  :D

As far as I was aware the legal responsibility would be to follow at a safe distance?

Nope but it's within my power to make sure they're awake and aint likely to smash into the back of my car :p As above, there may not be the possibility to let them past.

Letting the law know via a button is not gonna help you at that given point in time is it?

or likely to deter them in the future and it would be so exploited it's authority as a deterrent would be nigh on useless.

I stop and pull them out of their window and beat them to a pulp.

In reality, I just let them over take as I can't be dealing with worrying about someone behind me.

If I'm on single carriage roads, and there's a straight, I'll indicate to the left, and slow down allowing them to overtake me if they really want to get past me - I believe the highway code states that you should try an maintain a steady speed or slow down if necessary to let them past.

 What's tailgating then?

i wasn't disputing the dangers of tailgating. I was just making the point that you should NEVER, not matter how small or misshaped your genitals are, brake test anyone. You are just adding danger to an already risky situation.

if someone is tailgating the car in front should use a 4 second rule instead of two seconds so that the tailgaters gap is in front of the first car as well as the first cars gap, that way any emergency situation the first car has time to slow down safely for both

I love the people who are slow for ages but then decide to boot it once you start an overtake :p makes for interesting situation when ya in the oncoming traffic lane and then cars start to appear in the distance (especially if it's a cop car coming towards you ;) ). had a merc doing about 35-40 in a 60, so peeked out to the side, no cars for agessss (straight road), pull out and start my overtake....as I'm neck and neck the merc matches my acceleration... both keep accelerating, the oncoming traffic if quite a bit closer now. quick look back and the car behind has closed up my gap i was in so keep throttling it forwards.... eventually the other car decides to stop being a **** and pulls back so I can pull in with not much room to spare from the oncoming car... which happens to be a police van...who flashes his head lights at me. sorry officer..... not my fault this guy behind me is a douche. :p

yea if someone sticks right up my arse and I can't realistically do anything about it I just extend my gap from the car infront so I have a bigger breaking zone for a more gradual deceleration...hopefully stopping the guy behind from slamming into me :p

That's just dangerous driving plain and simple. If they do that, I either don't bother trying to overtake again, or find an alternative route, or hope that a dual carriageway comes up.

It's just not worth the danger trying to get one up with someone who is behaving in such a way.

You are just creating more risk - its so stupid. don't do it.

An emergency stop is one thing but forcing a situation just to show your displeasure with another driver is idiotic and dangerous.

Yup because driving right up someones ass isnt either idiotic or dangerous :p

If I’m on a single carriageway doing the speed limit and someone tailgates me you know what I do, I ignore them and carry on regardless. If they want to go faster than the speed limit then by all means overtake me.

I’m not going to jump out of their way or break test them because, well you know, it’s a retarded thing to do and will end up with someone wrapped around a tree.
.

Yup if they feel it's safe to overtake then let them.

If you are driving at 60, you should pull over to let the better, faster car, past (single lane or not :p )

What if that car then crashes and your stuck behind them waiting for hours on end to get past ;) :p

This is a stupid idea.

Then don't drive right up my ass.

What say if I DO need to make an emegency stop? animal/child/person/boulder rolls into the road, I'd rather not have some idiot right up my ass push me further forwards causing even more damage and theres always the possibility that I actually stop in time only for some clown to go straight into the back of me pushing me that bit more forwards than I need to be!

I'm with the chap above and the 2/4 second rule tbh

+1
And i bet it annoys the guy behind you as he ses space in front of you, space he could be itailgating in. Even if you let him past he'll just do it to the person in front as well.

Why force the situation? Take the higher ground and just let someone past. Why people get so hung up on other people overtaking them bemuses me.

Not gonna go out of my way certainly as others have said if there limited room, seen people act like this on country backroads and all sorts, no need for it and they will cause some damage at some point. They wanna drive like a **** then let them, not endangering myself.

f on a dual carriageway then theres plenty room anyway let them jog on down the inside lane.

Surely if there was enough room you'd move into the left lane to let them pass safely?

Nobody likes having a tailgater up their backside (well unless you're playing with mates or whatever). The safest and easiest way to get rid of them is simply to move over & get them to overtake you.

I've noticed over the last month that Golf drivers round my way tend to tailgate, not only tailgate but driving to the left or the right of you so that you can see one of the headlights all the time. Now I'm not a lane hogger and always pull over when there's a suitable gap so I've no idea what they are expecting of me?

I normally pull over to the left when safe to do so and then put my foot down.

If someone is tailgating you just slow down. No need to brake.

Personally it doesn't bother what the guy behind me is doing. If he hits me its his fault and I'll get a new motor out of it.

I like the idea but after driving around a lot today I would rather have a button that smashes people who have fog lights on for no reason.
