Reports: Google's Chrome OS coming 'late fall'

Nice find. There is another article here but beware the pop-ups: http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...o_push_Chrome_OS_into_quickly_shifting_market

As an OS I'm interested in ChromeOS, but as a product to buy I'm not so sure. I want an iPad more than a ChromeOS netbook and I managed to talk myself out of that fairly easily.

If all they are going to offer is fairly generic netbooks (which I think they will) then it might suffer from being "not Windows" like Linux did somewhat. If they offered something tablet-like or even 5-7" as a web device rather than a computer they could do quite well.

Price is an issue also. Last time I checked a solid state drive was a requirement (at least for OEMs) which won't come cheap. They need to be hitting sub £200 for a netbook in my opinion.

Nice thing about it is it's free of course, so you can try before you buy (the hardware) :)

It's been rumoured that the prime market for for Chrome OS is slates/tablets since the beginning of January (CES with all the other tablet releases) so you may get your wish.

EDIT: Gah! Terrible spelling! :(

I had a play with Hexxeh's build of Chromium OS back when it was released. It installed painlessly to a 4GB USB drive and it was amazing how fast it ran. It took a while to learn how to configure it to work through the office firewall (I ended up writing a FAQ for Hexxeh's site for it). But all in all I really liked it for web stuff.

That build didn't work properly with Shockwave, but I'm sure that will get worked out.
