Got my Focus and with it one normal key (with colour code) and one with the locking/unlocking buttons.

I want to get a second unlocking/locking key. Ive read the Focus manual it seems to say that i can program any key with the unlocking/locking buttons on it. Have i read this right?

I went to the Ford garage and he told me they had to do it on their computer. (which would cost more)

Is he trying to con me? I.E. Can i just by a new unlocking/locking key and program it myself.

You can "re-sync" your current key should it loose code.

To code a NEW key in will cost from Ford, so no to your question.

OK. Thanks.

With the standard key (no buttons) can i use it to get in and drive off straight away if the car is locked up by the button key? I.E. Do i have to do some funky key turning to turn the alarm/immboliser off?

If you have the "blue" key which wont have a remote on it AND a normal remote key then yes you can get a new ford remote key and programme it yourself.

I did it myself using a guide on the ford focus owners club website. I think you have to pay to join that now though but i did it myself so i know its possible.

You basicly have to use the keys you already have ( one HAS to be the blue key ) in the ignition in a set sequence. Then insert the new key and it will programme the key with the correct remote and immobiliser code.

Sadly i did this well over 2 years ago now and i cant remember how to do it, and i never printed out a hard copy

This was on a mk1 focus ( y reg ) so it may be different for the new models.

Edit: a bit of googling found this which may or may not be of some use http://www.mirez.co.uk/KeyProg.htm

I found that site too :)

I could always just buy one and see if i can get it to work.

Do you know if the 'blue' key can still start the car and turn off alarm/mobiliser if you lock it via the remote key?

Yes my blue key opens and starts the car.

I think if you have a blue key you are allowed 3 working keys. So you will be able to programe and have the master key ( blue ) and 2 other keys. If you have a red master key you can have upto 4 keys in total. Might be wrong on this its been a while since i did it.

As i remember the actual key from ford is about £50 if you have the original to get the part number from. The rest you can do yourself.

Yeah it should work fine, you can pick the fobs up cheap from ebay IIRC.

With recent Ford's, if you have 2 keys of any type that will start the car then you can programme more yourself (up to a total of 6 keys IIRC) using the instructions in the manual.

If you only have 1 key, it needs to go to Ford or somewhere with suitable diagnostic kit to add additional keys.

Ebay is the best source for remotes. The blanks for the remotes are only about £4 from Ford and they'll usually cut it for nothing if you ask nicely.

So by what most are saying i can by an uncut key from somewhere like ebay for about half the cost of what i can buy one from Ford (I checked the prices out), then get it cut by Ford to the spec of my 'blue' key.

Then i can program it as per my Focus manual. Which involes putting the 'blue' key in the ignition, doing some fancy turning then pressing any one button on the new AND original remote keys.

Ill probably give Ford a ring 1st to make sure they will cut the ebay key before i buy one.

Ah, and does it has to have the same part number as my existing remote key?

Yes - there are several models.

Loads of high street key places can cut Ford keys - Timpsons etc.

OK. Even better. I like doing things diy.

All this really puts me off going to the Ford garage for anything. I knew i could program the key as i read it in the manual, but the Ford guy wasnt having it, he even went to ask his 'mate' who was probably a mop and bucket. Scam scam scam. They wanted nearly £100 to do it all.

Thanks.
