i have to stick up for branded stuff also im affraid, it is better quality material, fits better and doesnt fade as quick, i once bought a pair of jeans from a supermarket for work (im a joiner so they get messy quick) tried them on once before work and threw them, they were an awful shape, dont get me wrong its not about the name its about the quality.
tbh when you mention a ben sherman shirt from high street stores he's prob had little to no input on the shirt, its just he can afford to employ better designers. so yes he can command a premium for his product

copies are cheaper for various reasons other than quality, branded clothing have massive overheads to consider, its not just 1 big sewing room.

but branded doesn't generally equal quality at all. look at gap....most of thier stuff is awful quality. You pay extra 'because its gap'.

As for ben sherman...you are justifying the extra cost because, although he has little to no input, he can hire more expensive designers? so essentially...you are paying for the name. Ben sherman shirts are cheaply made, poor quality and look the same as any other shirt, except they have the little ben sherman tag.

I think you made my point for me.

They DONT have massive overheads at all, certainly no more than anywhere else. Probably considerably less. They just charge more because people will pay it anyway, under the illusion that because its expensive it must be better.

once upon a time, when ben sherman designed and made his own shirts, the quality was probably high, as was the originality and so on. Now its just a cash cow, using the name he made for himself to sell pretty ordinary shirts for big money.

YES, supermarket jeans are nasty, I'm not denying that.

Using the ben sherman example, You can get a shirt from m&s or debenhams (for example) that is better quality, costs less and is essentially the same as the ben sherman, all bar the tag and maybe a few fancy colours that nobody would buy. (unless a violent puce colour is your thing i suppose)

I'm talking style over fashion, quality over branding, and the fact that so many people are convinced that paying more means better product, when in fact it doesn't neccessarily.

not at all, tbh i dont even look at the names when buying, if i see something i like the look of i will buy it, which is usually a branded name, it fits better because a designer with some expertise of what theyre doing has designed the cut.

they have considerably higher overheads than a lesser known brand, be it customer service departments, offices, designers, expansion, HR departments

I'm a brand whore i'm afraid but that's my choice becasue i like the clothes i buy, however, i will not EVER pay full price for them, i buy all my clothes in the sales so i get the best of both worlds, eg i'm currently wearing a pair of Firetrap Jeans which i've had for over a year, full retail price of these was £90 and i paid £35 for them, they fit very nicely and have worn nicely and are quite possibly my favourite Jeans, my second favourite item of leg clothing however is a pair of Tesco's 'Cherokee' 3/4 shorts in khaki, they are very light weight and were worn lots over the summer and have gone away for next summer.

What i'm saying is you can have the best of both worlds, you don't have to pay a premium for brands, but most will choose too, that's their choice. Also, those that don't like brands, that's your choice and i'm not going to hold that against you either. after all, we are all different :)

I agree with that for the most part, but River Island jeans seem to be pretty high quality. When I think of branded clothes, I'm thinking more along the lines of Diesel, Energie, Firetrap, Replay, D&G, Armani though, not Gap, RI, Topman, etc.

I dont regard Ben Sherman as a premium brand to be honest. It's run-of-the-mill in my book. I also don't regard Gap in the same way as i view Diesel, Firetrap, Armani, RL etc, Gap, to me is like River Island, Topman etc, you get some allright gear in there and some durge.
