Hello all

I'm new to the forums and requesting a little help if possible.

This is the first time I have tried upgrading my machine and after 5 years I feel she needs it.

My GPU is on her last legs with the fan nearly gone and making a lot of noise. Despite been cleaned, and I am having to drop settings on games as well now.

I currently have the following setup

Chillblast desktop with:
OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Home - APCI x64-based PC
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 0401, 6/21/2011
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, 3301 Mhz, 4 Core(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB
AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series GPU
BaseBoard Manufacturer - ASUSTeK Computer INC.

Hope this help with what I have if more info needed let me know. Not overly sure what you guys need.

I am looking to upgrade the GPU now spending up to a max of £250.
I play low level games XCOM2 and Dawn of war so not really power hungry.

I am also looking to add a Solid state drive for the OS and couple of games later.

Then lastly to upgrade the Motherboard and CPU together.

Any feedback would be much appreciated. Sorry for the wall of text.

Thanks in advance.

Now's not a good time to buy a graphics card with the new GPU's coming to market. If you can wait a while then Nvidia wil have released the GTX 1070 and AMD may have released their competing cards. Alternatively the previous generation cards should be going for bargain prices.

I see used prices dropping all the time now, there's unlikely to be a sudden drop/cliff edge prices are dropping and will continue to do so. Buy a cheap 970 used and enjoy it.

I'm waiting for the 1070/1080 to arrive too. Then might go for a 1070 or a used card.

The ram on the 970 is on the low side so might go for something with more ram.

I would wait and see what Mr Koduri brings to the table with Polaris for your £250 GPU budget. Other than that you could well have a choice of a cheap AMD 390/390X or a cheap Nvidia 970/980 after the new cards are released.

Wait for info and benches and then make up your mind. In the mean time if you cant wait then I would get a 2nd hand version of any of the above or even a 280X to tide you over. Depends on what resolution you are currently gaming at. All of the above would be more than fine for 1080P.

P.S. I wouldnt say Xcom 2 was a low level game, it's got some heavy gfx needs according to a lot of people. :)

Wait for Polaris to see AMD's offerings. And for the love of god do not buy gtx970 if you play XCOM 2.
The game is using 4gb+ vram. Your fps will tank.
Let alone shady dx12 support and without async compute.

wait for mid june if you can, AMD is pushing for market share, and you probably gonna get much better performance per dollar card, polaris 10 should be 200-250£ with 980 performance, 8Go of memory and better in DX12 games, no need to buy old 28nm GPUs with 14/16nm GPUs releasing in june.

As above Don't get a 970. 3.5GB Vram is less than useless now.
Wait for these new Nvidia cards to shake the prices of all cards down a bit. Then look for a card with 8GB VRAM. Take a 390 over a 970 every day of the week.
