Ok bear with me here guys and girls, I've stuck with Amd for the last 5 years and am completely out of tune with Intel's current offerings and ratings system, sockets etc etc!!!!

What I'm after is a recommendation for components around the Intel E6850 cpu, namely I'm needing help for a combo of parts to run said cpu which are motherboard/ram/heatsink/psu.

Primary use would be gaming, overclocking capability isn't a priority for me.

I was looking at the Asus P5K3 deluxe mobo along with 2GB Corsair DDR3, decent 600W psu and Arctic Cooler 7 HSF but heard issues about the HSF not fitting properly?

Aiming for at least 2gb of ram (was looking at a DDR3 setup though would certainly consider DDR2 due to current prices!)

I'll be using my current gfx card/hdd/case etc etc for the rest of the build.

Apologies for the slightly confusing rant but hoping some of you guys can help me!!

I'd definitely go for DDR2 at the moment. You can get 4gig PC6400C4 for around £65inc, compared to over £200 for only 2gig of DDR3.

You also might like to consider getting the Q6600 G0 instead of the E6850, although I'd only recommend this if you are prepared to overclock.

Why DDR3? You are paying a huge premium (about 9x more for the cheapest DDR3 than DDR2 roughly) for very little in the way of benefit, in fact you'd be better with 4gb DDR2 and it will cost significantly less plus the timings are better on DDR2.

What graphics card and case do you already have? Also be aware that most new motherboards only come with one IDE socket. :)

Budget for cpu/mobo/cpu hsf and psu is around £680. Current graphics card is evga overclocked 8800gts 640mb in an Antec Nine Hundred case with tagan 480w psu (aware this psu may need upgrading?), sli isn't important at all :)

I'm not a keen fan of overclocking cpu's that much so that capability isn't a priority for me.

As for DDR3, I'm aware that the prices are well, harsh! So I'm probably more inclined to go with a recommendation for DDR2 :)

Hope that helps, sorry for not making it more clear in original post.

Get a g0 quad and overclock it, plenty of guides to help on here and a mild overclock to around 3-3.2 ghz will not hurt the chip at all but give you much better value for money!

Would this combo work ok together at all? :)

OCZ GameXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 "LGA775 Conroe" 3.00GHz (1333FSB) -

Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard

OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Reaper HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR800C44GK)

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)

Looked like a good setup though I'm a dunce with intel's fsb ratings, ie using an fsb 1333 cpu with fsb 1033 ram (never owned an Intel before so go easy on me!) :)

Any clarification that the above would work together in some sort of harmony!?

Am I right in thinking that Intel no longer support IDE in their chipsets, so any IDE support on a board comes from another 3rd party chip? - Sorry, side note

Yep, they have dropped IDE so it is up to motherboard manufacturers to use a 3rd party solution. JMicron is quite a common one. :)

Keeping to the basics, Intel Core2Duo/Quad chips have an FSB that is quad pumped so for a 1066mhz chip you need 4x266.5mhz (e.g. PC4200 Ram as a minimum), for a 1333mhz chip you need 4x333mhz (PC5300). If you aren't overclocking at all then it shouldn't make much of a difference what you go with and the OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-5400C5 Dual Channel Vista Upgrade Gold Series DDR2 is about £50 cheaper than the Reaper edition you have picked.

The motherboard is good for the support of DDR2 and DDR3 on the same board but it does lack some of the features of the DS3P and apparantly might not be quite so stable.

Well in the end I plumped for the following;

Asus P5K-E,
Q6600 cpu,
Arctic cooler 7 hsf,
4 GB OCZ PC6400 Reaper edition ram (I'm now looking at having a go at overclocking due to hearing about so many people easily reaching 3GHZ, my intended target).

Cheers for all the advice chaps :)
