I was just reading the first paragraph of OXM's preview of Resi Evil 5 and in it they said that that 4 or 5 years ago the Resident Evil series looked to be going down hill and stated Resi Evil 0 as one of the examples of this.

Now I owned this title and personally thought that it really added new dimensions to the Resident Evil series and could have sworn that it was well received, certainly by the so called experts at least.

So what were your opinions of this title? Are OXM justified for this opinion or are they well of the mark like I believe?

I’ve got all the re for the gamecube, the remake,0,2,3,4 and code Veronica, and for what ever reason re0 is the only one I haven’t completed, I don’t know what it is I just cant get into it :(

So while I don’t think the re series was going down hill I can’t say I liked re0.

Can't comment, could not play a single one of the resident evil games, they were all immensley boring for me.

I love the games but I think after the second one they didn't build on the mythology as much as they could have, although code:Veronica was a step in the right direction.

I liked it, was a bit harder to get into - but when you did, I feel it was a decent title, and a worthy addition to the series.

The reason for it getting slated was because it wasn't any different to REmake. Not much evolution in the series yet it was a great game and i loved it. Lot's of polish to the game too. I bet if it was in the style of RE4 it would have been hailed one of the best games ever. RE4 was a awesome game but it wasn't Resident Evil. 0,1,2,3,CV is where it was at. At least for me anyway. It's basically down to the personal opinion though. I love the static camera angles, the lack of ammo and the totally off the point puzzles. It brings a lot of tension into the player and works the mind a little more compared to your action shooter that 4 was.

Why are you posting then? Played RE4 on the Wii?

I honestly don't see how anyone could call them boring  .

Games like Rome: Total War, Supreme Commander, World of Warcraft yes, but not something as intense to play as Resident Evil!

1v1 RTS games are far more intense than any RE I've played tbh.

I bought Resi Evil 0 about half a year ago but I just couldnt get into it,its not cos its a bad game its cos I have been playing Resi Evil 4 which had a far superior camera angle which made playing Zero very frustrating.

0 was amazing and I saw that as a turning point in the series with the introduction of the 'partner swap' feature it showed that Capcom was willing to change the traditional Resi formula a bit, something that I believe paved the way for Resi 4.
I would personally say the the series was at its weakest on the PS1 just after 3 (which was a good) however they then churned out the 'survivor' titles which were utter poo and then bought out CV which I think is the weakest of all the 'proper' resi games even though it is still a brilliant title and then did the two 'outbreak' games :( but thats just my opinion lol either way OXM are wrong to say that as 0 was and still is a superb example of a traditional survival horror game

Yeah, the Resident Evil games have always been strong, however it's sub-titles such as the Survivor series definitely tainted the name.

For me 3 was the worst, though 0 isn't in the same league as 1,2, CV or 4 either.

Since starting this thread I've dusted off the old Gamecube to give Resi Evil 0 another go (never completed it first time) and although It's true gameplay wise it's very similar to the previous titles in the series albeit with a couple of additions (switching between players for example) I've really got hooked to it again

OXM dont know what they're talking about :p

I think the main problem with Resi 0 is that it's just the same old thing. No game can stay virtually the same and not get old.

I think that's why RE4 was so well recieved. It's obviously a great game, but it's a huge departure from what Resi was known as and by the time it came out people were more than ready for the series to be reinvented.

Intense? Again I just did'nt get the attraction from the first two or three; bad camera angles, terrible control system and these "puzzles" that everyone liked just didnt seem to fit into the game for me, it was'nt credible enough for me as part of the story that these puzzles were there, nor were they particularly interesting. I have not played anything past code veronica btw, not sure if its changed much.

I do have res 4 on the GC, my brother gave me it when he got rid of his GC, might give it a whirl, just for the crack.

I've played and completed all the resident evils, except RE0. I did attempt it though, after playing RE4 but found it very slow, annoying and frustrating. Maybe if I had played it before RE4 I might have got into it but its the only RE game that did nothing for me.
