I currently have my MBP HDD partition into to 2 where one is my System and the other Filestore.
Can I safely shrink the second partition and increase the first partition using the built in Disk Utility without erasing any data??

Cheers in advance.

I think you can yeah, just drag the sliders and click Apply. If it does want to erase the partitions, it will come up with a dialog warning you that it wants to format it.

Are the partitions of the same filesystem? e.g. HFS+

If so, it should be a simple case of pulling sliders :)

Having tried using Disk Utility, I could resize my second Filestore partition no problem but it would not let me resize the first System partition to use the space that I had free'd up.
Gonna try doing it from the Boot CD, see if it works that way.

It is possible your disk just lacks contigious space to allow re-sizing.

Do a defrag and try again. Had this issue when trying to resize for bootcamp.

If you want a free defrag - just back up your primary partition to an external then restore it back to the internal. This writes the files in a nearl contigious block allowing Disk Utility to go about its work without pussyfooting around scattered files.
