Will there be resolution scaling on PS4 / X1, i.e able to set your res to match your screen, 1440P / 4K etc?

Obviously we're not talking about native games running, but up-scaling, in the same way PS3 and Xbox 360 eventually had ability to scale up to 1080P.

Not sure if some of you will remember but the Xbox 360 for example started out without HDMI and a resolution of 640 x 480, HDMI was added later and ability to use custom resolutions all the way up to 1080P.

Is there any reason this couldn't happen with current consoles up to 4K?

My current 1440P screen looks good with PS4 @ 1080P, but if the PS4 could output 1440P / 4K native for menu, media and possibly even upscale games it would be great..

Hoping somebody will say this is being worked on right now, and a new PS4 with HDMI 2.0 and ability to upscale will release soon :P

Another way of phrasing it is this, the PS4 is touted as being able to output 4K video, but it actually won't as the max resolution is 1080P. The 4K video will be played but displayed in 1080P and up-scaled via the display you use..

So unless the output can display 4K etc in menu / video playback it will never really be displaying 4K.

It needs an update to be able to output up to 4K image.. (We're not talking games, just menu / video playback etc) So it will never truly be able to do this according to you guys.

I will hope in vein it gets HDMI 2.0 (Might not even be needed, for menu / video as not 60FPS) in a future revision with ability to render menu / video etc up to 4K.

why?

any 4K tv will automatically upscale it for you

Yeah that is what I am saying, 'upscaled' by the TV. Not actually 4K.

So the current PS4 cannot support 4K video format in 4K, can only display it at 1080P and then the screen does the up-scaling.

Ergo PS4 is not 4K / 4K BluRay able..

I.e one would assume through either firmware or hardware revision, Sony will make PS4 compatible with 4K streaming and 4K BluRay and availability to render a native 4K image for media (Not games, unless via up scaling)

I think peeps are confused as to what I'm saying..

Just found this thread http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-General/PS4-Still-no-4K/td-p/45224721, seems others are wandering the same thing. 4K BluRay is coming from the years end, and Sony seem to be waiting for their software compatibility (Playready 3.0) before implementing true 4K playback. Whether that would just be limited to the media software for true 4K while everything else remains @ 1080P..
