Will there be resolution scaling on PS4 / X1, i.e able to set your res to match your screen, 1440P / 4K etc?

Obviously we're not talking about native games running, but up-scaling, in the same way PS3 and Xbox 360 eventually had ability to scale up to 1080P.

Not sure if some of you will remember but the Xbox 360 for example started out without HDMI and a resolution of 640 x 480, HDMI was added later and ability to use custom resolutions all the way up to 1080P.

Is there any reason this couldn't happen with current consoles up to 4K?

My current 1440P screen looks good with PS4 @ 1080P, but if the PS4 could output 1440P / 4K native for menu, media and possibly even upscale games it would be great..

Hoping somebody will say this is being worked on right now, and a new PS4 with HDMI 2.0 and ability to upscale will release soon :P

No.

1) Unless they release new versions with hdmi 2.0 as you say, they can't do it.

2) Not really any point in having the menus in greater than 1080p. When a) they won't look much different, b) most consoles are used on lounge tv's which are mostly 720/1080p at present.

3) Upscaling by a big amount = not so good a picture. There is only so much that Upscaling can do by design.

Your screen should be able to upscale so no reason why this is needed.

For instance I was playing both the ps4 and xb1 on a 65" 4K tv on friday and it looked fine.

No need for the console to do the upscaling (which would take away power from games) when the screen can do it natively.

It had component outputs which allowed for HD, as well as VGA. 1080p was added via a software update after release, but it was never an SD-only console.

Another way of phrasing it is this, the PS4 is touted as being able to output 4K video, but it actually won't as the max resolution is 1080P. The 4K video will be played but displayed in 1080P and up-scaled via the display you use..

So unless the output can display 4K etc in menu / video playback it will never really be displaying 4K.

It needs an update to be able to output up to 4K image.. (We're not talking games, just menu / video playback etc) So it will never truly be able to do this according to you guys.

I will hope in vein it gets HDMI 2.0 (Might not even be needed, for menu / video as not 60FPS) in a future revision with ability to render menu / video etc up to 4K.

why?

any 4K tv will automatically upscale it for you

Yeah that is what I am saying, 'upscaled' by the TV. Not actually 4K.

So the current PS4 cannot support 4K video format in 4K, can only display it at 1080P and then the screen does the up-scaling.

Ergo PS4 is not 4K / 4K BluRay able..

I.e one would assume through either firmware or hardware revision, Sony will make PS4 compatible with 4K streaming and 4K BluRay and availability to render a native 4K image for media (Not games, unless via up scaling)

I think peeps are confused as to what I'm saying..

Just found this thread http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-General/PS4-Still-no-4K/td-p/45224721, seems others are wandering the same thing. 4K BluRay is coming from the years end, and Sony seem to be waiting for their software compatibility (Playready 3.0) before implementing true 4K playback. Whether that would just be limited to the media software for true 4K while everything else remains @ 1080P..

you do know a 4K blu ray will cost like £50 initially?

it will also most likely need a special type of blu ray drive which I'm betting isn't as simple as a firmware upgrade on the ps4.

I'm also betting this type of new drive will be expensive.

Therefore I doubt you will ever see it in a PS4 revision unless of course it's cheap to implement.

It's a mute point anyway unless you can afford to spend like £50 on a 4K blu ray, which if you can then I'm sure you can afford a proper 4K device and therefore no need to have it on a games console.

4K is miles away from being the standard, I've watched 1080P content on a 4K tv as well as 4K demos. Whilst the demos blew me away a lot of the content looked fake. e.g. there is one of the eiffel tower and it didn't look real as if it was CGI. Also the 1080P content looked absolutely fine on the 4K set bare in mind it was a 65 inch (sony curved screen).

I don't think anyone should be jumping at the bit for 4K, 1080P still has a lot of legs in it and 4K isn't really viable atm due to costs, bandwidth, etc.

Like I said if you can afford the TV and the content then you don't need to worry if a PS4 can play it or not as you can afford a device which can.

To be honest the bandwith isn't that crazy for 4K due to some of the new compression techniques used....apparently, something I just read.

Also, people won't be buying 4K Blu Ray for long. Physical media is on the decline and more and more stream/download content. Amazon's fire TV box is £80.00 and supports 4K, can't be that big a commitment!

All they have done is upgrade the HDMI on the fire tv.

Upgrading to a 4K blu ray drive would be very expensive especially the first gen drives.

The fire tv is just a small android box with no optical drive.

Those new techniques are not re-inventing the wheel. Proper 4K requires proper bandwidth around 40-50MB I believe.

I don't understand why someone would pay the premium for a 4K tv and then watch low bit rate streams.

It's like me spending £500 on a set of headphones or a couple of grand on some speakers to listen to magnetic tape or 128kbps mp3's.

Sure 4K streams are better than 1080P much like 720p or 1080i broadcasts are better than SD but there is still a huge gap between them and proper content on blu ray.

The future seems to be in low bit rate (inferior quality) streams/broadcasts and physical media with a much better quality is dying out.

I wonder I have a 1080p fire tv, if I get the 4K one (I have 150MB broadband) will it supersample 4K or will it detect my output as being 1080p and therefore never take advantage of the better stream?

I wish the ps4 would use amd's super resolution and let you out at higher res the down scale to 1080p. My PC games look so much better like this and doesn't seem to take much more power to do.

You do realise that the PS4 is only able to render the majority of games at a max of 1080P at playable framerates? Many only manage to stay above 30fps at that resolution.

e.g.

Black Flag
Alien Isolation
Arkham Knight
Bloodborne
Destiny
Dragon Age Insquisition
Driveclub
Dying Light
GTA V
Infamous
Witcher

Unsure how you think any sort of super sampling can be implemented!

Well when I use it I only lose 2-5 fps at higher res than 1080p so can't be that hard to run. Optimization will improve over time so could be possible.
