Restart/Shutdown problems

Hi

Very recently my computer has started to basically freeze when I try to restart it. It goes through the whole restart process and then when it gets to the 'Windows is shutting down' screen it just freezes, with the mouse cursor disappearing and the keyboard being 'switched off' (basically no buttons work, eg. caps lock etc).

This also happens occasionally when shutting down but not as often. I don't know why it is happening either as I have just formatted my system about 4 hours ago and now have a fresh install of XP, but this problem was happening before I formatted the system aswell.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be, and if so, how to solve it?

Thanks for your help.

What do you mean? It's not really got anything to do with the keyboard, I was just saying that the keyboard turns off as if the computer has switched off but it just freezes on the 'Windows is shutting down' screen. And it is a USB keyboard btw.

If he had a usb keyboard I thought it might be something to do with the usb stack as the current usb implimentation requires cpu cycles

I may be barking up the wrong ally though
