Resting between exercise?

I have a repeat pattern with my fitness where I get addicted to it quite easily but get the same issues.

I do high intensive workouts daily for 6-7 days a week for a few months then get an illness and can't get rid of cold for a month.

So if I was to rest in between, is it better to do every other day or do 3-4 days and rest for 4-3 days?

Alternatively, do I need to just eat more to compensate?

Any advise is appreciated as I want to get out of this loop.

Whilst there is some evidence to link over-exercising with reduced immune system function, there are a fair few factors that could be at play here (including, but not limited to):

- you might just be susceptible to colds
- your hygiene habits might need addressing
- your commute/work puts you at risk
- you aren't sleeping enough
- you aren't eating enough
- your diet is rubbish/not sufficiently diverse and healthy...

There is nothing wrong with working out 6-7 times a week provided you take care of yourself... But you have to take care of the above as a minimum.

Depending on your desired outcomes, working out 3-4 times a week might actually get you there faster, anyway...

I don't get a great deal of colds normally, I've gone a few years without a serious cold before.

My hygiene is fine thanks, I wash my hands in normal situations. hand gel for places that don't look clean even after washing.

I drive to work and mainly sit in an office on my own.

Sleeping I've never needed too much but when I did my exercise I was in bed bŷ 10-11pm and up at 6am for exercise.

I eat quite diversely and healthily, occasional McDonald's but nothing too bad. Maybe not eating enough, I only drink water at work, salad and pasta for lunch with two bananas.

You are not eating enough. By a VERY long shot.

Whenever I start a strict cut I get a cold straight away, and that's normally when I do a drastic reduction in calories. As mentioned before, probably not eating enough.

But unless you're lifting weights with a serious goal to add some mass, I can't really be bothered to explain the ins and outs of it :p MrThingyX probably will.

I train 4-6 times per week in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, my biggest priority is getting enough quality sleep and eating well - I don't want to sound like a hippie but with an average of 8 hours training per week, it's not just about getting suffice protein but eating a variety of nutritious foods: some of my favorites are golden kiwi, red apples, blueberries, sweet potato, wholegrain rice, spinach, kimchi, eggs, organ meat, fish... eat the rainbow as they say;). I also like epsom salt baths to help me relax after a hard session and take Reflex Nexgen Pro every couple of months if I'm feeling particularly stressed or worn out (but this multi-vit never replaces my dieting habits).

Make sure you are getting 8 hours of sleep a night, not going to bed at 10, watching tv / playing with smart phone for a few hours then getting up at 6.

People tend to get these colds when their diet isn't sufficient, look at these kids who go off to uni, they all get freshers flu, its because their diet gets bad all of a sudden and they are out partying. The body gets worn down.

I'd say its the same in your case, you aren't doing enough to recover so you leave yourself open.
