Restoring a VM to Baremetal

This weekend I need to rebuild a server which has multiple issues which can't easily be resolved, the network is only a small one and for speed, I have decided to reinstall the OS and create a new AD etc.

My question is, if I do all the preparation on a KVM, then run Windows Server Backup, should I then be able to use System Image Recovery to restore it onto physical hardware without issue? The only thing I would be cautious about would be that the physical machine is running an LSI Megaraid controller in a RAID 5 configuration, would the restored image boot, or should I somehow pre-install the Megaraid drivers in the KVM first?

Thanks

Why don't you deploy the new AD instance in Hyper-V and then run Hyper-V on the reinstalled server, leaving you with one virtual instance of the OS spare? Seems daft to do physical installs in 2017 for non-specific server roles.

I only mentioned it as you have access to it if you're running a Pro version of Windows, and the VM images are very portable. Sets you up really well for backups in future as well, as well as things like Azure Site Recovery.

If I only have the one license for server 2016, how does that work if I have to run server core with Hyper-V and then the guest ?

You install server 2016 onto the physical hardware, install the Hyper-V role (and only that role), and then you can run up to two instances of Server 2016 within Hyper-V, assuming Standard licensing rather than Datacenter.
