Hey,

I am in the final stages of building my new PC.

I have taken my HDD from my old PC and installed it into my new PC.

My new PC recognises it fine and tells me how much space it has etc.

When I try to access some of my files it says that "You haven't got correct permissions to access the file location". These are family photos that are of great value to me and they aren't showing up on screen.

Does anyone know how to get permission to access my files?

EDIT: I'm using Windows 7 as my operating system.

Thanks for your time,

Hatton

You need to take ownership of the folder(s) that the files reside in. I have used the registry hack here in the past which gives you the 'take ownership' option when you right click on a folder and is a little easier than using the command prompt to do it.

Ok I got that plug in. I made ownership of the entire drive.

It's still not giving me valid access as I don't have the correct permissions.

"Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location"

Quite confused by this.

Don't take ownership of the entire drive - only the folder you need. Once you have ownership move the files to your current my pictures folder and it should work fine.

No need for registry hacks.

Find the folder you want, right-click, Properties, Security tab, Advanced, Owner tab, Change owner to, Edit...

Agreed this is the correct way, but using the "Take Ownership" reg tweak to do it all via the context menu is easier for people who do not have the knowledge in how the file properties work. One step as opposed to 6/7
