Retention brackets

Yesterday was playing football manager on the pc, went to put shopping away & came back and heard a loud-ish pop bang and comp had locked then shutoff.

After waiting for bit managed to get into bios and checked temps: cpu: 127c
Checked cooler and found it was attached one side of bracket only, the other clip on the edge had snapped off.

If I buy a generic one off the bay (am2/940), is it just a case of take out mobo, unscrew and re-fit bracket? Also would it have damaged the cpu? Or would the thermal protection cut in before any damage will have occured?

It's an easy swap. As you say, it's just a couple of screws. Hopefully thermal protection kicked in and shut it down before any damage was done.

I have 2 spare I bought off ebay - they look like this, and ended up not fitting. I could pop one in the post for you as no doubt they'll only end up getting binned ?

MW, thanks for the offer, but was that link for the MM? If so haven't got access yet. Purchased one from the bay just got to find my mx-2 paste now.
