Retirement Feels... Strange

Not retired, just working for yourself now which is an extra question and a bonus. Volunteer on one of those restored steam railways ? shift work means you got a habit of keeping early hours which could be useful for sea fishing or something, whatever it is you dont have to be back the next day so always a nice luxury of not being stuck in the rat race anymore, traffic etc

41 years on the railway, most of it working shifts

Just dont go off the rails mate. Look for the signals. Tunnel all your free energy into a new hobby. Become the driver of your destiny. Let off steam if you must but always be on your guard for pitfalls.

Think between the lines, stay level headed as you are crossing into a new path in your life. Train your mind to keep busy. Just dont go loco....

Did you get a carriage clock for long service ?

Ah nice - you've just reminded me. The old boiler's looking worst for ware these days and her fire box has had it - time for a nippy little shunter too me thinks.

The older generation live to work and only ever took holidays from work if they actually went away on holiday, never to just sit at home/relax/catch up on things. So find it hard finding stuff to do when they retire. Me on the other hand would retire tomorrow if I could and I'd have plenty to fill my time in. Sadly I don't think I'll be able to retire until at least state pension age whenever that will be (if any). :(
i tend to find the opposite .at work the younger ones seem to chase having cars they cant afford and the latest phones ect ect but to do this work 3 days of their 4 day weekend ,i will have had my car 17 years next year ,time is so much more important

I have a sneaking suspicion I won't retire but..
* Keep fit with a group class - this broadens your social contact
* Do a degree - continue doing them
* Do a creative task - such as music or painting (not just a simplistic nod to it but actually do courses and learn/do it(
* travel
* garden

One of the things you'll find is that you slow down, there's less pressure to achieve things which can lead into habits that never need to be broken.
