So it would appear my trusty AX750 is finally due its retirement, as it's started to whine a little. I've been looking at an RM1000x or a Lian Li SX Platinum 1000W but have spotted a Fractal Design Ion 3 1000W for £99.99. Would this be a good option?

My main priority is silence and low coil whine, as currently the PSU is the loudest part of my system, even at high load.

It doesn't appear to have a Cybernetics rating but is based off of the Seasonic Focus GX which appears to be very well rated.
Focus GX is on the list:

Rolling the dice with the latter one, unfortunately. If you get a larger PSU than needed, it can usually stay passive for a little longer, depending on airflow.

My system is running happily on a 750W so I'm hoping jumping up to 1000W could give me some more headroom.

The price you have quoted seems very competitive for the build quality, but there have been complaints about the V4 model being noisy with a poorly optimised fan profile. From the review I saw, Fractal have replaced the fan, so they may have addressed this problem. I think Seasonic may have also increased the size and coverage of the heatsinks in later models.

I'll take a punt, at £99.99 I surely can't go too wrong. If it's noisy I'll try my luck with Fractal Design. I don't think I've heard bad things about their customer service.

Yeah, I'd have no concern based on the review. The Fractal version is slightly longer too, with the bigger fan.
