retriecing lost data

well lost all the partition off my hd checked with getdataback and its recoverable, but i dont want to shell out to get the full version of getdataback anyone know of a free proggy that will let me recover my data?

A lot of the free ones I have used in the past have either retrieved the files in an unusable state, or retreived them all with the same file extension so that you then had to go through each file to work out what it originally was.
This sort of thing isn't cheap otherwise how would data recovery companies justify charging what they do?

never used any of these programs

but am i right in thinking that if you have written any data to the hard drive after your los, then it is gone for good?
