Retrieving or resetting admin password?

Friend has a Mac and recently had the hard drive replaced. Her data was backed up and put back on the new hard drive but she now says that her admin password is now changed and she doesn't know what it is.

Is there a way to retrieve the admin password or reset it?.

I haven't a clue about Mac's so hoping someone can give me a few pointers!

In the end we didn't have to retrieve the pw as it had been left intentionally blank and she was able to login by just hitting the return key.
