With retro consoles ever ageing, I’m starting to see some components fail/become faulty, particularly early to mid 90s CD consoles. Has anyone used a good/reputable repairer that perhaps specialises in old consoles?

There was a guy - 8bitplus - I always intended to use when the time came, but he doesn’t accept work anymore sadly. His work was amazing.

I’ve tried googling, but it appears there are plenty of random companies that appear to treat consoles like smartphone repairs and have several bad reviews each. Any suggestions welcome.

Ps I’m past doing soldering repairs myself and yes I’m aware of the benefits of emulation etc etc.

I've really enjoyed reading through the work Vince has done on here, he might be able to offer some help too:

Retrosix appears to be a decent repair guy. Maybe reach out to him and see if he can accomodate you.

He has a YT channel where he shows some of the mods and stuff he's designed for consoles.

Thanks, I did find these guys but there’s a couple of worrying feedback posts on their FB. I will take another look.

I purchased my RGB N64 from this guy, really good service and solder work is ace. I want to send my Dreamcast to him for a DCHDMI mod but haven't had the money to do so yet.

Yeah, I’ve been mulling that upgrade over too. I’ve heard good things about David’s work and would definitely consider him for mod work in the future. I don’t know if he does repairs, but I could ask at the time.

I’ve found someone who seems pretty decent, will see how that goes. These old computers and consoles won’t last forever - some are over 30 years old -but would be nice to keep them going a bit longer.

Since I posted here I’ve had a console repaired by a nice chap in Bristol. The CD motor spindle had dropped and was fouling on the housing. He fixed that and replaced a faulty inductor (which was affecting the video output) and all for not a lot of money. Very happy with the work.

I’ve also picked up an ODE, in this case for the Neo Geo CD. This one allows you to keep the optical drive in place, so after Crimbo I’ll send it back to get that fitted.

Im looking at a MODE to go in my PAL Dreamcast, that might be for the new year. I think I need to rationalise some of my collection first, I’ve got around 20 consoles atm. Not sure how that happened!
