Anyone done this before?

I got a 3gs and its constantly rebooting after the apple logo comes up.
Tired restoring and jailbreak but to no avail!

its still in warranty but the nearest apple store is 30 mins away via car.

Also i did tinker with it and removed the motherboard which removed some warranty sticker.

I also have no proof of ownership and the phone wasn't originally mine. ( not stolen)

Any one help?

cheers

If you have opened it then its no longer under warranty.

Either pay Apple for a replacement (£150 or so) or buy a new one.

If you had not opened it, then Apple would have given you a new one without much question. They replaced my iPhone 4 without asking to see a receipt, and I didn't even buy it from them, I bought it from Orange!

Is it real that simple, just walse on in and say me phone dont work and they swap it?

They check for signs.

First they diagnose it with their software, then look with the holes with some scope thing (i think this is for water damage).

They can just swap it, but they can also send it away for repair, and that choice isn't up to the consumer...

They dont open the 3gs in the shop, they just check the 2 water sensors, I've read on some forum, about some guy who got his water damaged iphone replaced but then 2 weeks later got the iphone sent back and charged for the replacement 3gs. Not sure how this works when you go to the apple store as they only take down a contact number.

You need to book in a 'Genius Bar' appointment to which is linked to your itunes account, where all your details are. Chances are if they don't check the phone in-store fully when they come round to refurbishing it they will probably chase you up, there is probably some clause in the form you sign when they swap the phone over for you.

Ummm, they definitely do open them in store. In the past they have swapped the LCD over as well as replace one of mine. Also had one where the backlight died, they opened this to check the internal water sensors etc. if the warranty sticker is missing or broken you will probably have to pay for repair.

The "scope thing" is done by shining a small tourch into the head phone jack. Their is a water damage marker in the bottom of the headphone jack. The other is inside the case.

I got my 3GS from O2 and replaced by an Apple Store. They did looked into the headphone jack and also the dock area too. Apart from that no other questions were asked.

You'll be fine as long as the screws don't look like they've been scratched due to opening. My advise is to make sure they are not and get the holes a little dusty! looks authentic then. I've opened mine before and removed everything. Also the water sensor had triggered so I painted it white with tipex and they swapped it! Although the guy was looking through his scope for longer than usual!
AAAAND I had a broken headphone jack stuck in the top which I tried to machine drill out. It was in quite a bad state! Maybe I got lucky but I have had my previous models replaced! I'm outta warranty now so I have to behave!
