Hi,

Hopefully this one will be quick!

I'm looking to get back into PC gaming! I started PC Gaming in 2007 and then between 2009 and 2011 i played competitive esports (CoD4 ProMod). However since 2011 i haven't played a single game and no longer have a gaming rig etc.

It is something i am looking to get back into, my question to you guys here is are there currently any games out there on PC that are played competitively like Promod CoD4 was?

I've done some research, but from what i have seen Overwatch isn't my style of game.

I dont fancy shelling out on a new rig if i'm not going to get the use out of it.

Thanks
-Kyle

Overwatch is THE funnest first person shooter I have ever played, and I have played dozens of them. It didn't appeal to me at first either. The cartoony look and general mechanics turned me off at first. Then I tried it and was instantly hooked. It's such a deep game and teamwork is so important. There is a competitive league you can play in once you reach level 25 and the people who play competitive are brutal, cunning, and highly skilled, and they will laugh you out of a game if you suck. It's just fantastic. I play every day.

Other than overwatch, the biggest FPS on PC now is Battlefield 1. I don't like this game but it is a COD style game that adds vehicles and horses to the mix. I don't know what the competitive play situation is with that game but I'm sure leagues exist.

Apart from that you have your standard eSports titles, League of Legends, DOTA2, etc. Nobody's really playing Starcraft 2 at this point but that was very big a couple of years ago.

Don't know what else to say... PC gaming is in a golden age right now and is the biggest market segment in gaming after (just barely after) mobile (those people don't count anyways with their wussy candy crush and angry birds).

The amount of power that it's possible to squeeze out of a gaming rig these days is specacular and there are juicy peripherals as well. There are monitors that refresh 144+ times per second with adaptive sync where the monitor only refreshes when the GPU sends it a frame. The input lag and responsiveness are unmatched by consoles. Mice have gotten to a point of perfection as have keyboards. There are all kinds of headsets and high end speakers. Cases have become art pieces. There are insanely good power supplies out there. It's just a great time to play PC games.

Thanks for replying.

Sounds like i may have to wait a while until something more competitive and my style of play is out.

Thanks

Counterstrike GO should be right up your street?
CoD is still competitive just not a big PC community anymore.
Then you have the mobas mentioned above. Heroes of the storm, DOTA, League of legends. All free to play aswell. (the mobas, not CS or cod)

there is only really csgo and overwatch that are like sorta promod skill wise. h1z1 king of the Kill is being talked about.works well and growing rapidly among streamers.

csgo you either good or not.if you so so dont play it.
overwatch is easy. so its a bit more like you do well without so much skill.
H1 king of kill is bit of both but top players is rearly skilled.

Cs:go and overwatch are the two biggest at the moment generally.

Still got LoL etc.

Overwatch is very good fun and enjoyable, CS:Go the same. However both have toxic communities so if you can put the idiot players aside, go for it.

Save your money and try Dirty Bomb.

Plays just as good if not better than anything else out there atm. Including BF and overwatch its a hidden gem.

I actually think age is a factor in competitive games. I'm 32 now and I'm not nearly as sharp as I was when I was a young counter strike addict. I'm still capable and hold my own, but younguns these days have a real edge.

CS:GO probably the closest to what you are looking for, although I would imagine you would have played CS:S if that was your cup of tea.

Quake Champions coming out at some point, remains to be seen whether that will have a competitive scene or not.

Bear in mind you will always be able to find a competitive FPS game, but the community size will be quite small on a lot of them.

dirtybomb is a great game played it a lot since launch but odd descisions kinda keep it a small game.has potential but overwatch has the hype.normally you need the biggest type of game for you to get the leagues/ladders and money to make esports work.dirt bomb just doesnt have that potential.

bf1 or battlefield games wont become esport titles to much random deaths.struggled for years in anykind of leagues to grow get to where it needs.

age does play a massive roll espeically in fast speed twitch style shooters.

Haha, yeah true. But the young-guns don't have lives outside of gaming. Some of us have to hold down a career and obligations outside of work. They'll soon learn.

Kill cams make me realise how much slower I am than many. I see the way I get killed and I can understand I was visible but the speed in which people twitch to target me is somewhat unbelievable.

I was once the one dealing it out. Now I'm the victim :(
