"Return To The Roots" is an open-source-project, which aims to renew the original The Settlers 2.

We aim to extend new features such as a multiplayer mode via internet as well as the support for modern hardware and several operating systems like Windows XP/Vista/Seven, Linux and MacOS. Likewise we want to invent some smaller upgrades. Unfortunately it is necessary to rewrite the whole game, but we will stick to the original graphics and sounds, because they are still common and nice to be heard or seen.

Meanwhile almost all features of the orginial game are implemented.
There are both, stable and nightly versions available. You will still need a original "The Settlers 2 Gold Edition"® version to play Settlers 2.5 RttR.

Does it have the original levels and two campaigns?

Sounds great, and those screenshots made me really nostalgic.

What does high quality single?
High quality single is Return to the Roots (English "return to roots"). Since, as we find, for example, the Settlers 5 Settlers little of the 2 - and that we feel with Return To The Roots want to come back to the original "feeling".

Why are you doing this?
Because we want to reprogramming the old settlers 2 (see 1) to introduce several improvements, such as a multiplayer mode. And not to forget - the fun of programming.

What is all built into the game (temporarily)?
The main objectives are platform independence, the multiplayer mode and playing at higher resolutions than 640x480, and later perhaps also improved AI. Everything else should remain first in the original as far as possible. Later you can still add small improvements.

What do you make secures legal? There are no legal problems with BlueByte?
You need the original Settlers 2 Gold to play Return To The Roots can. Furthermore, no original files are changed, only used. It could thus be regarded as addon.

Can you then play the original Settlers 2 after the installation of Return To The Roots continue?
Yes of course! There is no change to the original Settlers 2, but there are only copied our files in the directory tree of the original game. In this case no files are replaced.

When will you be ready to return to the roots?
It depends on many factors and is therefore not predictable. We do not set any deadline to cramp us, then we can not keep anyway, but it is ready when it's done.

I would like to help. What can I do?
Overall, mainly to do programming work. Programmer with strong skills in C + + and possibly also in OpenGL, AI, and network programming are therefore always needed to accelerate the work. If the basic structure, is also smaller things such as the GUI is done. If someone would have high quality single dictionary in his language, he is also welcome. Someone who wants to join should always report chat!

Why are there twice a project?
Since we found very good idea of silenzium.at, but there has not done much, we decided to start their own project.

Where there is Return To The Roots to download?
First test versions can be found under Downloads.
because

The Return To The Roots will cost something?
Of course not, if only not for legal reasons. It's just a hobby project. If you want, but a donation (see PayPal - button on this page) because we have nothing against objections.

What are the advantages and disadvantages in relation to this project S2DnG?
This is not a commercial, but a hobby project. Accordingly, we can use the graphics of S2DnG not keep up, we also consider not so important. The S2 graphics are finally after 10 years to look beautiful, especially at higher resolutions and much clearer. We also have, for example by 2-D graphics substantially more resources we can put in more important things in finding the way or the AI. We have finally, no publisher, the pressure on us to exercise, so we will also deliver a decent multiplayer mode, which incidentally does not use ready-engine, but 100% self working, and we therefore all possibilities are open, from storage and replay function. It is therefore even after a release to go further to improve and then suddenly it's not final, except maybe 1-2 patches as is the case usually in the commercial games;)

Why are the hardware requirements are so high?
To play Return To The Roots a 3D graphics card is provided, the omission is often the reason for low performance, as we render the landscape by using OpenGL "live" as it is common practice today. During installation of meaningful software rendering the landscape should be rendered by software in advance and that is then displayed in "real" 2D libraries (eg Windows DirectDraw). Since the effort is in our opinion, however, is many times greater than the benefits, we have omitted such a function.

I want to play a single player game, but when I click "Single Player" - "start game" click, nothing happens.
Return To The Roots still has no single player mode. But you can start on the multiplayer mode a game with computer opponents. For details, can be found in the readme.

What languages are supported?
Currently operate the following languages: English, German, Spanish. The Swedish, Finnish and French translation is already implemented but not yet complete.

What operating systems are supported?
Currently: Windows and Linux. For Mac OS X (Intel) you have the time or switch to Dream Weavers Crossover Games. Thanks to the opening of the source code, we hope to brave Macprogrammierer, so there will hopefully soon be functioning native MacOS versions.

Who or What's Nightly?
Nightly's we call the daily builds created from the current source code. The link can be found under "Downloads".
How can I play in the tournaments? On the website it seems so to give a ranking.
Sorry, not at all. Nor is the ranking on the homepage only ornament.

How does it differ from settlers 2?

From the screenshots its obviously not a graphical upgrade

What is all built into the game (temporarily)?
The main objectives are platform independence, the multiplayer mode and playing at higher resolutions than 640x480, and later perhaps also improved AI. Everything else should remain first in the original as far as possible. Later you can still add small improvements.

:D

Hang on, aren't you jumping the gun here?
I understand fun of programming and wanting a multiplayer component, but can't you just base this on the Settlers II version that was included as an extra with the special edition of Settlers II 10th Aniversary?
It runs on all modern hardware, I play it on my Win7/64 PC.

Not quite what I meant. Only the special edition of 10th Anniversary Edtion contained both the 'remake' and a version of the original Settler II that runs on modern hardware and Windows versions.
