Bought a cheapo exercise bike from Argos yesterday. Put it together and the thing is total pants. Tension adjuster barely works and the pedalling motion is not smooth. Not sure if that is sufficient reason to take it back but the main issue being, the thing is now assembled and can't just be put back in the box. Has anyone else had experience of doing a return in these circumstances?

Oh and why is it, whenever you buy from Argos, the box nearly always looks as if it has been taped up in the shop? H'mmm probably because it's already been taken back one or more times and just cycled back for stock until some poor sap keeps it.

If you can atleast partly take it apart into a more manageable form they will probably take it back.

Argos do customer views so its possible someone has opened it at the collection counter, etc. to check colour and so on previously - customer returns will largely go back to RDC as damaged stock.

I once bought an LED camping lamp. It wasn't cheap at 50 quid but I wanted a decent one that lasted.

I got home only to find that that 4 of the 12 led arrays weren't even attached, I took it back and was told they didn't have any more in stock but due to in 2 days. They would text me when it was in.

2 days later I went back having gotten the text.

They gave me a very familiar box so I opened it there and then and it was the exact one I'd returned.

Argos is one of the few remaining high street stores who value good customer service.

In the face of Amazon, etc. they need to - the USP and delivering on it by staying on top of customer service and handling of items ultimately is going to be what stands between them going the way of the likes of many retailers of late :s I've seen presentations to the industry by the likes of Mike Coupe, etc. and they seem to have decent strategic vision for navigating the trends and so on of an increasingly digital world and the instagram generation, etc. but none of that matters ultimately if customers come away dissatisfied by the service they receive.

I would guess you have never had to take a complaint 'further' with them. They have a no customer feedback complaits procedure. If you cannot sort a problem out in the store, their only answer is for you to "Try another store". If that does not work you have no options. They are an awful company, they sell open box products as new and have no problem taping products up to make them look new. I stopped buying from argos earlier in the year after having one too many unsolved problems with them.

My mistake when returning goods to argos was to be honest. In the case of argos, honestly does not get results.

The irony of some of the responses isn't lost... :)

For now have dumped it in the garage.

The RRP was £80 but was on offer at £60.

Will probably just write it off and dig a bit deeper for something more upmarket. What appealed about this one was the compact nature as the newer magnetic resistance models are quite large and require a maths degree to programme.

just take it back man....take it all to bits and put it back in the box...tell them it doesn't work properly. They won't assemble it to check....well I'd be surprisd if they did anyway :D

Taken from Argos website:-

Can I return it if there’s nothing wrong with it?

Absolutely! We offer a 30 day returns guarantee on most items. (We’re nice like that.) So if you need to bring it back, just bring it back to any Argos store. Or if you got it delivered, we can collect it for free and refund your original delivery charge. If it is a small item you can also return it to a store at a convenient time for you and we can refund you immediately. However it may take 5 – 7 days for your bank to process the money.

We’ll either refund the cash onto the original payment method or offer you an exchange. Easy.

You just need these 3 things:

  • Your proof of purchase
  • The item should be unused, in its original packaging and in a re-sellable condition
  • Any free items that came with your product unused and in a re-sellable condition

You could argue that the faults weren't apparent until it was put together which is fair enough on something like a exercise bike. I would certainly have a go at taking it back for a refund.

The cheaper exercise bikes and treadmills are usually pretty meh anyhow - I did pickup a "Olympic Motorized Folding Treadmill" from Amazon for somewhere I didn't have much space which is OK as far as the cheaper stuff goes (though the manual is in google translated English). But generally the cheaper stuff I've had any experience of is pretty poor.
