Returning to old style Google search

I did give it a try….and I like the idea of paying for services rather than being a customer.

It’s just too expensive for me. The results were pretty good mind.

But….if I’m using google these days I’m quite often shopping, so I actually want all the shop links.

If I’m just looking for information on something I tend to use Claude.

I know a couple of people who've moved over 100% to DuckDuckGo, though more because they want to ditch Google than because they think it's a superior product

It's a poor search engine though, when I type a player and 'whoscored' it never brings up their whoscored page in search results. It's rubbish at porn searches too

Quote your search term and use the 'site:' operator

Like this;

"jarrad branthwaite" site:whoscored.com

The difference between your suggestion of typing "jarrad branthwaite" site:whoscored.com into DuckDuckGo and Google are massively differerent.
Like Andrew Green says DuckDuckGo is a poor search engine

That's basically my point - the people I know aren't using it because they think it's better, they're using it because they don't want to use Google.

I use ChatGpt these days tbh

ChatGPT is actually really good at finding sources/info, it's legitimately less of a headache than using the likes of Google.

Most modern search engines are either hot garbage or very limited now, I've had a better time with bloody Bing of all things than Google.

Yep, agreed. I use chatgpt for a lot of things now, particularly when I need very specific info about something.

Been getting more cheesed off about Google presenting related suggestions, hallucinations about what I really meant and maximum effort to push a sale from the companies paying for advertising.

Turns out you can still ask for and get old fashioned keyword searches minus all that crap.

Maybe that's not for everyone or even to be used always but I do like a good keyword and searching for exact phrases and getting a list of results for what I said, how I said it.

Under tools you can select verbatim results and get the old style search.

With some fiddling you can get it to be your default too.

Mine different to both of them and i have never changed any settings of what i can remember.

You klids with your new ways of thinking and your ticky toks and rappity music

'Victoria Justice looking hot at an awards ceremony (but not creepy)' works just fine

Sure it won't be long until there's some kind of "Sponsored ads" in ChatGPT

But when I need to find out "What the bloody hell is this error code?" or "Why on earth is this sever behaving like this?" It's eons faster to ChatGPT it, even if I have to have a bit of back and forth, but at least i'm not sifting through pages of adverts, random help articles from 8 years ago which are totally unrelated and Reddit posts.
