Could I wander into Waterstones, and take back a book without a receipt?

One that quite possibly didn't come from there (though i'd obviously check they at least stocked it first)

Because someone got me a Michael Moore book, I think he's a sensationalist ****smoker personally, so I have no interest in reading said book. However, the person who gave it to me probably wouldn't take it well should I ask for the receipt to take it back...

so, reckon i could try taking it back without receipt?

Just wondering if they're likely to be any more likely to give me credit or something seeing as it's christmas and lots of people probably have piles of crap they don't want but don't have a receipt for for whatever reason...

They will have a discresion at this time of year, but usually a recipt is needed as you could just pick it up off the shelf and then ask to exchange for another book, then walk out.

If Stone's say no, try Smiths. :)

At Borders we will take it back without a receipt, they will check that they have sold it in past month take your name address and give you a swap or a gift card. Don't see why Waterstones would be too different, most books are sale or return so they will only get sent back to the publisher anyway.

you will most likely get the lowest price that that book has been sold for though so that may only be a few quid.

I'm sure if you aired your opinion of Michael Moore to a suitably comedy level in the shop they would be quite happy to exchange it :D

I took a book back to Tesco yesterday without a receipt (I bought the book myself about a fortnight before Christmas and then got a second copy as a present).
Exchange was my option - basically told I could have up to £12 worth of non-food items, so we swapped it for a DVD.

Shops are usually quite good at this time of the year - but without a receipt don't expect a refund and remember you're not entitled to one.
It's all down to the goodwill of the store.
