I bought a dvd at lunchtime today.

Get home and start watching it, Then my brother comes home with the same dvd he bought from another location at a slightly cheaper price.

It's not the sort of dvd i want to own two copies off so can I get a refund?

It;s a popular high street store, the item has been unsealed but is in perfect condition complete with receipt.

Yep. Go back to the store, with receipt. Explain the situation and ask to swap it.

If they say no, don't argue and dont meet their eyes. Exit the store without incident.
 
Get your bro to take his unopened copy back instead? least you got some of the money back then D:? If its not opened that is..
 
Sometimes stores have a policy of allowing returns within a month for any reason. You might as well try.

I managed to get 2 copies of a CD and sold one on ebay for the same price I paid for it. If it's a good price then you could try that.
 
As said above really.. I have worked with DVDs and CDs etc and I would always say no to returning an opened (and in your case watched) DVD -afterall it's not a library. However normally when I explain that we can't return opened DVDs the customer goes mad and asks for the manager, who invariably authorises it :mad:

If I were you I would just take your brothers copy back.

True but exceptions exist - DVDs being one of them. If we were to allow returns of opened DVDs with no quibble then people could just buy a DVD, open it, copy it 10000000000 times and sell them. Then they could return the original DVD to us and get their money back!

My manager used to do the same (not in respect to DVDs, but other electrical goods), and it used to drive me mad! You lay down the law to some cheeky muppet who's pushing their luck, and then your manager can't be bothered to argue. What are we - second hand stores?! ;) (NOT directed at OP - just slightly OT :) )

People don't do that though, they just download it or rent it from blockbuster to copy it. I mean how many people in the general public know how to use the decrypting software to copy a dvd? People buy dvds from shops when they actually want to keep it, people aren't going to put themselves through that much effort and risk of losing £15 to copy a dvd. Also It's a bit stupid for a shop to say that you can use any of our products and them return them but not cds. I mean you could photocopy a book.

You certainly don't have any legal right to return it - it may be that one of the places you bought them from has a policy of accepting returns subject to certain conditions, or even if they don't and you're pleasant and explain the situation they might agree to take it back.
