Rev counter trouble

Just had a new clutch fitted on my xantia and on the way home notice that the rev counter is all the way round past 8000 resting on the bottom of the dash.

Phoned the garage straight away but apparently it was like that when i took it to them, but they can fix it for me but its" gonaa cos".

So What do i start looking for to fix it? could have an idiot over revved it and got the needle stuck or have they forgotton to plug something back in? My thinking would say the needle would stay at zero if they hadn't plugged something in or a dirty contact.

Lol - I don't think it's someone revving it, although with french electrics you never know :)

Sounds like the sensor's shorted out, not sure on the ins and outs of it but it's not likely to be expensive. Could be disconnected but I imagine it would read 0 if that was the case

If it wasn't like that when you gave it to them, insist they fix it, the damage was clearly done when they were working on the clutch

After being told it was like it when i brought it in i lost my rag. Guy said it was nothing to do with them, they had not gone anywhere near what would cause it to fail but they would get someone impartial to look at it. If it was a general fault i would have to pay for it but if it was something they did they would pay for it. I said it would be fairer if i took it to Citroen dealer and did the same thing but they weren't prepared to do that. I think there is as much chance of them finding themselves at fault as finding a chicken with teeth and i'm not paying them to fix something they have broken.
I'll probably end up with a handful of sand put in the oil filler as well, i never realised how bad this garage was.

Tried bashing it but nothing. It looks like it is powered so its all the way around. I guess disconnecting the battery would show up if its shorting.

Where is the rpm pick-up likely to be on a citroen ?

I had the same problem on my old Peugeot 406. it was the actual instrument cluster that was knackered as a few weeks later the speedometer went also.

It's quite common for the flywheel RPM pick up sensor to cause this fault [rev counter fault]
...
Where is this sensor located? How can I access it?
...
Depending on the gearbox it may be mounted at the top of the gearbox in the bell-housing pointing at the flywheel and have about 8 inches of black wire coming out of it with a 3 pin brown plug on it, or nearer the front of the gearbox with the plug straight into it. Just a single bolt holds it in.
No chance that when the highly skilled mechanics at your garage were fitting the new clutch they went anywhere near the gearbox is there?

No no, of course not, why would they do that?

The flywheel sensor for the rev counter has to be removed to remove the gearbox in order to replace the clutch.

I'd go down there and demand they sort it.

make sure the rev counter has a good earth and positive, the 3rd wire goes to the coilpack positive..

i dont think they set out to brake your rev counter, its just coincidence

thats how it is on mine anyway, dont know about flywheel sensors

Interesting, my ex's Xantia did just that (tacho stuck past the red) after she had a new clutch fitted, and her garage did not want to know either.

I'm not sure thats totally true. If the engine managment is reading the same sensor as the rev counter is its will totally mess up emissions, fuel economy or even lean the motor out too far..

its controlled by the signals which also fire the ignition coil.

moreoften rev counters are fed from the coil. in older cars at least anyway.

Well it was

Took the dash out today and gave the clocks a bash from the bottom which freed it. Looks as if someone has down-shifted so hard the needle has spun round to what would have been about 10,000 rpm and jammed on the clock surround.
Great garage, absolutely p*****d, i paid them to treat my car like that.

I doubt it, your little conrods would have burst.

Renault don't build road car engines to take 10k.

Renault certainly don't build Xantia's to rev to 10k ;)

But yes, that sort of behaviour would have probably killed it, so it almost certainly got there by other means
