maybe im going totally insane, but im absolutely convinced my puma is revving higher before its hitting the limiter... is there any way this could happen, or am I going crazy?

BTW: Do all modern cars have rev limiters? I often hit the rev limits on my car but I've been told by a bloke my car doesn't have a rev limiter but infact "valve bounces" whatever that is and it's bad for the engine?

Your car almost definatly does have a rev limiter.

Maybe the ECU has "adapted" itself owing to some change? Maybe you're just going nuts or cross eyed ;)

only change I can think is im constantly using optimax now... probably the last 10 tanks (2000 + miles)

you gain nothing by revving that high anyway...except for the eventual garage bill.

Different engines have their peak power at a particular range.

Maybe your car loves optimax.

power was still rising nicely when the car hit the limiter on the rollers at powerstation, so chances are theres a bit more power just before the engine explodes ;)

Maybe the rev counter insert is slipping anti-clockwise, tis a Ford after all ;)

Most production engines can't rev high enough to bounce the valves, the rest of the components simply can't make the engine get up there. They all have rev limiters these days to keep the stresses on the engine low to prolong its life. Gone are the days of bending all the pushrods and smashing conrods revving the **** off it showing off :D
