So a guy that works next door to us came in tonight with his car to be repaired, first though i'll tell you how it all happened.

They work in manufacturing, the customer in question is mid way management on the workshop floor. He and another employee have been giving an apprentice a hard time of late for being lazy or useless at his job, the usual workshop banter/bullying. Today the apprentice had enough, he walked out just before lunch and wasn't seen again.
5pm stopping time came for my customer, he comes out of work and starts his car, puts his foot on the brake pedel and it sinks right to the floor. Strange he thinks, gets out and walks round looking under the car, he sees a large pool of brake fluid at the front left side of the car on the ground.
It turns out that his left hand front brake hose and abs sensor wire have been cut!!!
Now he and others suspect this apprentice has done it, but it will be very hard to prove as there are no security cameras in the carpark.
He is pretty annoyed about it, but just glad he noticed before he drove off.
He said himself though..."it's scary what people will do, and i'm angry at whoever did it as it could have lead to a serious accident or worse. But I feel I am partly to blame as I was overly hard on the guy"
My customer has decided not to go to the police about the matter, but has reported the incident to his manager and the company owner.

So, next time you wind up the new guy, or are a complete ass to someone for no reason, just remember not everyone has the same morals or limits as you. I believe what goes around comes around, although this is a little extreme, it's still a sobering lesson to learn in life on the whole.

...and some people just don't seem to know when they've gone over the line with ribbing... still don't condone what the apprentice apparently did, but some people definitely have it coming to them.

So the apprentice has quit his job completely then? I'd consider reporting it to the police anyway - whether it was the apprentice or not if brake lines are being cut by someone then surely they need to know.

It is unfortunate but some people just aren't cut out for constant ribbing and take what others say a little more seriously.

Generally speaking if the person stays quiet and ignores you you've crossed the line. It's give and take at work and it'll go around in circles as to who gets ribbed rather than the same person constantly.

A bit scarey that, always good to check the brakes before pulling off!

I know the apprentice in question, used to live not too far from him, he's the kind of guy that wouldn't take it.
I'm also the kind of person that will only take so much ribbing, but i'd never resort to those kinds of measures. Been plenty day's i've wanted to floor the boss, but hey, he's an ass, every work place has them, just gotta find ways to deal with them and their sad little games.

Not just that some people can't take it, they don't know how to give it back either, which I guess is frustrating for the poor little blighters.

something similar happened at our place, engineering manager didnt like the layout/cad guy coming in late etc taking breaks at funny times.... so decides to reverse his 4x4 warrior straight into the guys focus. all caught on cctv
the guy even tried blaming the accident on the focus owner!!!! to which i nearly got involved (fist into face)
all sorted now and was forced to appologise, the engineering manager still works there but has now alienated everyone who works below him. his days are numbered :p

Exactly

my last job we had a manager who thought of his role to come in and bully people into working harder. He had no interest in getting to know his team, or motivating them, or socializing with them or anything like that. He came to work, shouted at people, was rude to them, and went home with a clear conscience because even though he was bullying people non stop, and had been warned by higher management numerous times, he in his mind had made people work harder which is what he was paid to do.

He should have been sacked long ago, and was only promoted to management by virtue of having been there since the company started 20 years ago, and a result nobody dared get rid of him.

Every workplace has one.

The world is full of ****s. Nowt you can do about it really, but I would be reporting it to the police.
Criminal damage at the very least is NOT the way forward for a bit of work sarcasm/ribbing, no matter how you look at it.
He could have killed the guy or any number of other people in the process.

This needs to be reported to the police.

If the guy can't take a ribbing at work what is he going to do when something goes seriously wrong in his life?

What happens if they do it to somone else and they ended up in a serious accident because of it? Its quite conceivable to start the car and acclerate to 30 mph without touching the brakes, what would have happened if someone had then run out in front of the car?

Criminal damage? Attempted murder more like!

Get the police involved, this is no way to sort a disagreement!

That's what HR is for, and why they are almost a separate entity to the rest of the company!

That's the problem though. Not many kids can take the sort of abuse these guys can dish out. It was a bit of a shock for me at least, I thought I'd left the ****ing taking behind me the second I strolled out of the school gates for the last time, but when you've lived 20 years of being me you've pretty heard it all before.

Apprentices can and do get it rotten. I think it is worse these days because the old boys aren't really allowed to string them up with the practical **** like they had done to them back in the day (The stories I've been told by the old boys who did their time at the rolls factory :D) so they've got to 'make up' with it the name calling.

I don't think the attitudes gel well either. The old boys just won't get on with the gang-star from the hood attitude many young people these days days. And when I say won't get on I mean completely ignoring or just constant (and probably heart felt) **** taking. Never had that problem because I'm lucky that my mum taught me a bit of manors before sodding off a few thousand miles away, makes my life a lot easier :p.

Hopefully it wasn't the boy and he'll come to his senses before he throws his future down the toilet. Good apprenticeships are hard to come by, its stupid to throw away a good career because of a few loose words.

Jesus, I sound like some old duffer :D.

If you're going to **** on people, expect to be **** on yourself. He deserved it.

I would have agreed to an extent if he'd done something like slash a tyre, or keyed the car, but even then i'd rather someone gave me a bloody nose than touch my car if I was an ass to someone. I don't think anyone deserves their brakes sabotaged, well ok if they lived on an island on their own with no other people then thats fine.

Shame the apprentice went down that road and didn't report his colleagues.

And what do you expect the management to do? Have a go at senior floor staff for being what has been done to apprentices since the dawn of time? It's never going to be done, even in this world of Health and safety.
