Has anyone else's G2 started black screening ?
Mine is cycling through the following after warming up (5-15 minutes of use):
- normal operation for a few seconds
- right eye goes black (a couple of seconds)
- left eye goes balck (a couple of seconds)
- both eyes go black (a few seconds)
- both eyes back on (a few seconds)
- repeat

This is my second G2 that is doing this. The first was replaced under warranty after confiming it wasn't a cable issue.

I've tried all sorts of things including a new cable, different DP & USB ports on the PC, USB power settings, a fresh install of Windows.
Also tried a USB PCIe card, and a DisplayPort repeater.
Tried options using both OpenXR, SteamVR, and on a variety of games.

I believe it's an overheating issue near the cable conenctor on the headset, but before I pull it apart to fit a small fan in that area I wondered if anyone else had seen / resolved this issue ?

Thankfully I kept my original G1 as a backup and am using that in the mean time.

In case anyone else comes looking... this was my solution

Brilliant!

Thanks for the useful post. I wonder why it suddenly start to fail after 8 months or so. Is there some TIM which is drying out?
You definitely need to add a bright red LED though.

I'm not sure why it seems that the headsets are breakign after ~8 months, although I was a fairly heavy user in this time.
I've noticed from other people seeing the same issues, that is always seems to be on a newer headset. The old ones don't seem to be reporting the same issue.
If what I've posted helps anyone else in this situation, then that's me happy.

Bought a second hand unit, which the guy said he's used for long stints, but I've had a few black screens and crashed out once.

Currently a mate is printing this bit and I've ordered all the fan, batteries etc...

Should have it installed this week.

Thanks for the file @Littlenose , great mod!

Hope it works out for you.
If you need any help, just shout.

You will also need the 4 little spacers that have tabs on the side to allow you to screw the original screws into them, then the front plate screws fix into the other side.
The tabs on the spacers push stop them from spinning when you're trying to tightne them up. Don't go too tight, or you may split them in half.

Only other thing, is I'd suggest ny-lock nuts for the ones internal to the HMD... you don't want those coming loose.

good luck :)

M3 nylocs, not sure I'll have those at work, will check tomorrow.

Matey is printing up the spacers too, should have it all tomorrow.

Hi @Littlenose

Just looking at the spacers, one ends chamfered, does that end going the headset?
Looks like a smaller diameter hole and the screws in the headset look quite small.

Where are you using the nuts?

fit the fan first :)
The front plate screw in that top corner needs to be tightened with a screwdriver "through" the fan blades

@Littlenose

Mod done, only issue was the M3 screws didn't take in the spacers. Assume that's down the my mates printer accuracy.
The smaller holes took nicely.

I just used some PK screws instead and they took fine.

Just need the batteries now and all will be working.

I've done a few 30 to 40minute flights in msfs2020 and no black screens, I was experiencing them reasonably often.
I'm quite confident it's solved it, if not, dramatically reduced it.
I'll monitor over the next few weeks

You can feel the head unit is much much cooler on that top left point.
