Reverse Gear When Moving Forwards

I had the same thought when poodling around the work multi-storey car park. Think I'll wait for my gearbox to start breaking in the traditional renault fashion before I finnish it off with trying reverse though!
 
that M550d is incredible, also odd how he can hit 3k revs standing still, using the brake?

I've never dared to do it in mine

Clarkey answered for me, as usual you failed to read my post and comprehend its meaning. I'm sure Mike understood too.

Interesting side note: Fly by wire throttle lets some electronic stability programs boost the throttle to prevent engine braking from breaking traction. Engine braking will never lock the wheels (unless something is catastrophically wrong), it's why engine braking is better than brakes in a lot of situations.

Engine braking is very good. However it is possible to skid if the revs are high enough that the engine braking is too high. This is more apparent in rear wheel drive vehicles which is when i have experienced this. Front wheel drive I don't think it is possible unless you are over revving from an inappropriate down change, which is not good for the engine.

It seems Hartge already have a 15% power boost (to 438 HP) available. I imagine we'll see 450 HP chips/remaps soon enough! When you think it has a combined MPG of 45, it's really quite incredible.

And yup, he's standing on the brake. It's a great way to launch a torque converter auto, as you get a smooth start which helps avoid wheelspin.

It's nicer on the drivetrain than any clutch dump, but the transmission will be under a significant load during a brake launch. That said, they are extremely hardy, and as long as you don't hold it under a lot of power and hard braking for more than a couple of seconds, I imagine they'll be no lasting damage.
 
I got stuck on a hill with ice on in a Renualt Master van, tried reversing back but wouldn't go and it stalled. So I for some reason forgot I was in reverse and thought ill roll forward and "bump" start it... It started alright.. ran the engine backwards as well! Luckily I stopped sharpish as that would have been an expensive lesson!
 
Nearly did this in a courtesy car whilst on the motorway. Instinctively reached for 6th gear but at the last second realised this car had only 5 gears with reverse in place of the 6th gear. Was more worried about the terrifying grinding noise rather than actually being able to get it into reverse at 65mph. :p

The grinding noise though is damn scary, especially in my car where even the slightest roll forward will cause the car to unleash this hellish grinding noise when going into reverse gear.
 
It's so easy to do this if you're used to a 6 speed with R on the left, and then swap to a 5 speed with R where 6th usually is.

My dad did it once accidentally, it just grinds, but doesn't engage the gear. It was only got like 0.5 sec till he realised what he was trying to do.

Probably not healthy for the car though :p
 
My dad has tried to accidently do that a few times in my car and every time on the motorway :eek: Gives me a mild heart attack every time. Luckily my car beeps loudly when you select reverse anyway so he soon realises!
 
I've got an MX5 with a six-speed box. Sixth and reverse are next to each other and on mor than one occasion I've shifted from 5th into reverse (obviously at speed).

It just makes a horrible noise, probably isn't good for the box either!

The CTR has reverse lockout, but my Swift Sport doesn't. I've tried a couple of times to find 6th in my Swift to be met with a nice healthy crunching.

I also managed to smoke the tyres in my CTR when performing a money shift. I nearly soiled my pants thinking I'd killed the engine for a few seconds, then carried on gunning it. I wonder what the DC2 driver behind me thought. :o

This concerns me shopping for a swift ;) I've had a 6 speed box for a long time - perhaps I should save some more until I can afford a 12 plate!
