I am selling my 120GB SSD on to a friend, and want to revert my windows 8 pro installation on my 1TB HDD.

Currently I have it as one large partition, so might be better to partition off say 200GB for the ghost/image of the SSD.

I've never done this before with making a drive appear as another.. what free tool should I use, and how to I do it please?

What make of HDD have you got, both Western Digital (Acronis True Image WD Edition) and Seagate (DiscWizard) have limited versions of Acronis that can do this for you.

macrium reflect and clone the ssd drive to the 1tb hdd, then expand the partition to fill all 1tb and that's it

I have a 1tb wd caviar black so can use the wd software. I already have a lot of stuff on the 1tb disk I do not wish to lose.

shrink the 1tb to make freespace from the windows storage managment or your software (at least 120gb), make it a partition in the free space (not sure you could name it C at this stage), and clone the ssd to it

be careful to disconnect the ssd before trying boot the HDD else the bios or OS will try to ignore the change

on booting just the hdd you may have to adjust your bios and depending on the software you may have to fix the windows boot record and files Have the right windows repair disk to hand and the ability to use it and be able to look stuff up on the internet

so long as you retain the ssd you should be ok with windows, just be very careful with copying to the correct partition on the 1tb drive!
