review of 4850 link here

WOAH!! Hold the phone here, is that true??

Yep. Already posts on the net showing a 4850 running with either a 3870 or 3870x2 in crossfire.

I'll try and find you the link.

The 4850 is looking great, especially in crossfire. Is the 4870 due to be released at the same time?

Nvidia will have no choice but to drop their prices for the GTX 260/280. Serves them right and I wish ATI all the luck in the world!

Desperate to see them on top again. Last ATI card I had was an ATI X850XT PE and that was the last time I personally think they were on top. It was quicker than the 6800 Ultra.

X1900 series was better than the 7 series also. Better IQ, the ability to do both HDR and AA and scaled better at higher resolutions I believe. I moved to the X1900 from the X800XT PE.

Yes, the 4 series is looking impressive. Not the powerhouse that is the GTX 280 is but with maybe giving out the same performances for cheaper is looking really good for ATI. The majority are looking to buy at a good price, not the minimal top end crew ;).

I like the look of that info. I've already got an HD3870XT in our second pc, so swapping it round to the main pc and Xfiring it with either a 4850 or 4870 is an option I hadn't considered before. I may as well make use of the X38 mobo I've got which gives 2 x X16 pci-e slots. I wonder if theres a "sweet spot" with Xfiring different cards (like 3870X2 with a standard 3870 'frinstance?):)

o0 Wow! That's all I can say.. didn't realise you could do that with Ati in crossfire (thought it was like SLI where the cards have to be similar). So does it cause a slight slow down as they are not matched?

I'm just gobsmacked that is possible, guess I will get the x48 mobo then ;D

Isn't it true that if you run your crossfire like this, it will run as fast as the slowest card in your system?

- ATI 4870
- ATI 3870

Those techpowerup benchmarks are crazy. 4850 crossfire showing the same performance as the 280 and for what, 60% of the price. Look forward to what the 4870 in crossfire brings.

I assume the ATI's are going to be coming out made by a variety of makers, if I was going NV I would probably go for a BFG card....anyone got any recommendations for a decent ATI card brand?

Crossfire is a tad different to SLi in this aspect, the cards run at their own clock speeds. They don't have to be the same (they do with SLi)

But yeah, I have a 3870 at the mo, be it with a crossfireable p35 motheboard, be interesting how much gain I'd get when its in the second slot...

I never had an X1900 so I can't comment. Totally agree with you though, the future is looking good for ATI. I really hope there is a significant boost from 4850 - 4870.

Looks very good to me for the budget sector, looks like it's beating the 8800GT or there about on a par/better as the 8800Ultra/9800GTX... so exactly where I expected it to be... and is probably now THE budget card to have unless the 8800GT's undercut it by say £40 or more...

Well done ATi, for once, this isn't actually dissapointing performance per buck like the G260/280 have been... makes me think that if the 4870 comes out around £199-£220, nVidia have a serious problem on their hands from what I'm seeing here!!! Plus if 4870x2 comes around for say £400 quid? Jesus, nVidia better watch out as don't think they'll now be able to go 280x2 on them new boards... this is actually getting interesting now!

They were good cards. My m8's got it now though.

Aye, the future's bright, the future is erm a different shade of orange (red = ATI) :o. :) Roll on the release of these new cards and lets see where it's at between Nvidia and ATI. It's so annoying when you are on the brink of finding out and still have to wait :(.

Couldn’t agree any more. Good post!

Tell me about it. I'm not building my PC until Crimbo, well until Nehalem is out. So I'm praying it will be released end of this year. I've only got a laptop from work atm but I've got my PS3 and 40" Samsung Series 6 TV to keep me going until then.

Will be worth the wait though. Can't wait to start buying some serious custom water cooling. Got my poor empty Silverstone TJ07B-W case sat here doing nothing. :(

So a Review showing the budget 4850 beating a 9800GTX with 4xaa and sometimes beating a GTX260 for £270 is disappointing?

It beats a 9800GTX and a 8800 Ultra,

God, what were people expecting?

A 4850 beating a GTX280?

does it 'beat' the 9800GTX and the 8800 Ultra? not from that review is doesn't. although admittedly it goes close in a couple of games.
