The last time I played through the first was half life source.

Understand the anniversary has brought about an 'upgrade' as it were - what are you better playing though?

As listed on Steam, Half-Life or Half-Life:Source?

See, someone mentioned to me that the atmosphere isn't the same, like something was a little off compared to the original?

It's tricky, my son wanted to play through the original but the graphics etc are just so old he couldn't get into it. Black Mesa helps but yeah it's not the same, but that could just be our rose tinted specs

It will be different because black mesa won't have the exact aura of the original, seeing as part of that aura is directly connected to the nature of it being old and janky.

two big changes:

1. They shortened "On a rail" significantly, but it can be patched in.
2. At first release there was no Xen, it's now in place, but it's re-imagined.

I prefer BM to HL, the rest of the game is pretty much the same, it's just in the newer engine.

Definitely go with black mesa, it's a great experience. It's like playing half life as you remember it looking.

Go with the original, avoid souce (unless you fix all the issues, there are resources online on how to do that). Never played Black Mesa, but it's just not Half-Life. You might also want turn off the head tilting they added in the Anniversary update, and re-enable texture filtering.

BM is fine, playing through it again now actually off the back of this thread.

Don't forget OG HL also has the option for the original weapon models (and sounds?) the original MP5 is a classic, the monstrosity they replaced it with needs to be taken around the back of the woodshed and put out of its misery.
