It may be extremely cheap, but c'mon! I get better read speeds from my mech drives! Seek times are the only benefit this has to offer. I can't see anyone putting a 32GB drive in their single-bay laptop anyway lol.

I would if I was short of money and didn't have a Samsung!
Been waiting for small, cheap drives for simple boot volumes for ages. Shame they've only started making them now when 64, even 128GB drives are now very affordable..

Gibbo uses an old laptop with an old samsung SSD with similar performance stats and the difference is night and day to a mech drive. access times and small file read/write speeds are vastly superior to a mech drive and it shows.

0.5MB/s read/write on a mech drive in the low end 4k VS a drive that will do 15MB/s+ in the same area? As said.. its night and day.

Max reads and writes may not be the best but the purpose of this drive is not for that.

Hi there

Back in 2009 I got myself a Samsung 30GB SSD with 100mb/s Read and 80mb/s write. Previous to this my laptop had a 512GB Fujitsu 5400rpm HDD in it.

Installing this new but by todays standards slow SSD was like a whole new laptop, it felt like it had had its memory capacity doubled, a faster CPU and a better battery. Yet all I had changed was the HDD to an SSD, the result was a huge noticable improvement in everything it did with longer battery life.

So these starter kits are a great idea and are ideal for laptop users. :)

I'll concede that maybe for a netbook this would be a good idea for dossing about on the sofa. Cheap as chips for that. I still think it would be silly for a full-size lappy to have a 32GB drive by itself.

Awesome price!

I put 30GB SSD's into my netbook and media centre, both of them run W7 x64, I've still got 2.5gb of free space on the netbook, this is including the pagefile and hibernation file (around 6.5gb)

The media centre has about 6gb free.

Best upgrade ever for both!

It does have its uses I guess. Lower power output than a mechanical drive would be much appreciated. I imagine it would really help some of the cheap notebooks. Since Linux is becoming a more viable portable OS these days I imagine that it would fly with one of these.

How old can the laptop be if it has a SATA connection?
Like Kotu I thought the title meant a proper old laptop with IDE connection.
My other laptop has a 1TB drive in it. I think I'd notice the lack of 968GB as much as the speed increase!

^you'd be surprised, my netbook has a super slow cpu AMD V105. I put 4gb of ram in there and an SSD and it flies along nicely now :)
