Hi,
Coming up to the 12 month milestone since graduating from university, I'm beginning to wonder where it is I want to be going with my career. I have a degree in Computer information systems and am now working in a finance based role for the defence industry. I've come to the conclusion however that sat in front of a computer from 9-5 just isn't my bag baby.

I'm trying to come up with a list of possible careers that might be an interesting alternative to what I'm doing now. So far I’ve thought along the lines of RAF Police Officer and a Customs & Excise Officer (Not a VAT man).

So basically what careers have the rest of you considered as being a viable alternative to the 9-5 office worker that is enjoyable, rewarding and pays well enough to get by.

I know that’s vague, just looking for some inspiration.

I'm currently half a project manager for a massive IT firm and half a pub landlord.

I'm enjoying it immensely :)

Not enough hours in the day, like...

I dont know if I could hack seeing peoples blood and guts everyday.

Good point about the shift work, that could be a bit of a drag. I'm liking the landlord idea. Do you own the pub yourself ? or is it owned by a brewery ? (thats how must pubs work right ?)

Game Reserve Park Ranger, I would love that job!!

Edit: Either that or a full time (paid) malware researcher.

I wouldnt mind being Kylie Minogues bottom shiner.

However, I also agree that the 9-5 (or 7-6 as it has been for a long time recently!) in front of a computer has had its day, already. I'll be looking to sponge off a rich woman sooner then you can say 'whore!'.

My ideal job is one where I get to meet new people all the time, travel all over the world, negotiate with suppliers and clients, and see the fruits of my labour in a fully operational state, which luckily for me is what I do.

Either that or test driver for Porsche.

The opposite of this would be my worst job, stuck in the same place with the same faces doing menial tasks.

I like this! The Uk doesn't have a Coast Guard in the same way the states does though do they?

By the US way, do you mean Baywatch style? :p I highly doubt it. I think British coast guards work part time, having to quickly react to sinking boats etc. You always see them shooting around in a Helicopter or something.

[Edit]
Ahh, ninja edit! :p

No we don't.

What about the RNLI? there are some paid careers, however a lot of the josb there are for volenteers.

I have considered the RNLI, being a keen boatsman, but it would mean moving to the coast, which right now isn't really possible.

People say this quite often, most of the time it's said jokingly, but would you really?

I know I wouldn't.
Can't imagine its a particularly interesting job, dull, pretty dense people (of course thats a generalisation). After you've seen 10 naked women in a row...

I know I wouldn't.

I would have no issue with being paid to photograph naked women.

I would never be the other side of the camera though, being a pornstar is a tough depressing life softened only slightly by mild fame and wealth.
