Rewiring my home and networking at the same time

I have more wall ports than I do switch ports and right now i'm nowhere near the limit. It's pretty unlikely anyone will use more than 24 ports at home unless you are running a lot of computer kit (like a lab).

I use a HP 1920-24G, Linksys LGS308P (for PoE - AP's and VoIP phone, Cisco SPA504G) and a LGS308 non-poe under the stairs where I didn't put enough points (6)!.. Argh.

I still have no real clue what i should be looking for in a switch, ive never used one or looked for one, all i know is it needs to be a gigabit switch.

I've looked at 3 options im not sure which one to get, im leaning towards bledds suggestion.

1. TP-Link TL-SG1024D 24-port Desktop Gigabit Switch - 5 year warranty

2. NETGEAR SOHO Gigabit Ethernet 24 Port Unmanaged Switch GS324 - 3 year warranty
same price as option one

3. D-Link DGS-1210-48 48 port - no warranty, looks about the same.

Pretty much any switch will do the job, as long as it has enough ports. For budget stuff i'd choose TP-Link or Linksys, for lower-midrange i'd go for HP procurve (e.g. 1920).

The TP-Link is also fan cooled, only the netgear is fanless i think.

Thanks, which would you choose out of the TP-Link and D-Link switch if it was you buying for the first time

I know im dragging this out a bit but for me its worth asking so i dont make a mistake

Its 60/40 to TP-Link at the moment for me only due to the warranty

TP-Link
Pros - Good review, New comes with a 5 year warranty
Con - less ports out of the 2. costs double

D-Link
Pros - £35 . 48 port
number of things i dont think i would use (Smart Switches with Fibre Uplinks ect)
Cons
Used, no warranty

That TP-Link is fanless, it states it in the specs.

£35 for that D-Link is cheap, what's wrong with it?

Thats good to know, I thought it had a fan.

From what i've been told nothing is wrong with it, its been removed from a working environment due to a upgrade.

a company that recycles it old equipment is selling it

The issues i have are I don't know how old it is, how long its been used for and I don't know if it come in more then one version and if so i don't know which one, but i've asked, im not sure if they will know but i'm awaiting a reply.

they have advertised it for more but they are willing to accept my offer.

If you're using a rack/cabinet, then you want the TL-SG1024 and not TL-SG1024D.

The 'D' in this model means Desktop model, so it doesn't have rackmount fixings.

As I said above, a normal 24 port gigabit switch, they will all just be the same. All able to max out each port at the same time.

I wouldn't buy a second hand managed web switch unless you know what you're doing. You don't need it. Plus, it has a fan..

Just get yourself a nice new simple unmanaged 24 port switch, it will 'just work' instantly.
