Anybody play this racing simulation? It looks awesome!

I downloaded the demo last night, which didn't really give me much of a feel for the game despite it being 700megs having only two tracks and an underpowered car, but the amount of mods available is ridiculous.

It seems they have reproduced the whole of the F1 2006 season with all tracks and cars, a McLaren F1 challenge (oh yes), Porsche Gt2 cups, a full 1979 F1 season, Saleens... the list seems endless.

Check out http://www.rfactorcentral.com/.

For those that have tried, I'm keen to hear what you think of it? The online race tournaments seem quite lively, I'd love to get into that.

Best online racer out there in my opinion, mods make the game though the demo is pants.
Well worth a trial though as they do refund if you don't like it.
Finding the right mods and right tracks can be a pain sometimes. You really need to go online check the servers what is popular etc and then download them. Some suit you some don't but there is always a few mods that you fall in love with.

It's fairly well talked about on this forum. My personal view is that it's good for a blast because you can jump from one type of car into another, and the amount of mods for it is, as you say, ridiculous (which is should be; that's what the game is designed for).

However, I'm getting tired of the same old ISI racing game engine and it's bugs that creep up in every ISI-powered game, and unless you're in a committed league and/or willing to download gigs of tracks and mods, online racing is a sham. Although if you can find a compatible server with a fair amount of competitors, it's ok.

It's decent, but doesn't keep me playing for a decent amount of time.

Elk makes a fair point and the mish mash mod scene is a pain in the **** as like flys around crap, players run off to download the new mod without even thinking. They don't spend long enough on a mod to truly know it so public racing can be stupid with crashers and rammas everywhere. It seems every man and his dog is spitting out mods and few are real quality.
I've been around Rfactor for ages and know enough people to race and who to avoid so it's not quite as annoying for me. As with all online racers though it's plagued with Divvy kids who cannot drive/race to save there lives and even when passed clean they just ram you off at the next bend.
Having said all that though with the right mod and the right track and some sensible players the game is awesome.

The mods are what attracted me to the game. Although I can't get it to work so i'll never know :(

I think it's nice how with the mods you get so many different types of racing game in one (Karting, F1, GTR etc) but after reading a few of the mods on rfactorcentral, there are some which people seem to just bang out for the sake of it, instead of acctually putting some effort in. The hall of fame ones all look really good though

Basically if it doesn't have at least 4 stars and plenty of reviews ignore it.
The best all round mod is the Megane mod. Also take notice of the track makers names as there are a few easily recognisable names/modders you can rely on.

Consistency.
The car handles the same on all tracks and in all conditions. Feedback is good and the balance between being on the edge and falling off the track is the same for all. Good FPS and good handling and a lot of folk enjoy it so there is always a megane race to pick up.
No simulated cars will feel like real cars but the Megane gives you a good solid basis to get used to its handling characteristics. When you go into a bend you know what will happen time and time again. A very solid mod.

Sounds great! Definitely have to give that one a whirl.

How did you pay for it? There seems to be a few options, get an unlock code/coupon, order a cd and purchase instantly. Ideally, being the impatient person I am, I'd like to be able to unlock it immediately when I get home tonight. :)

Should I use the purchase instantly one? I'm guessing that sounds like the right method to use!! :p

One of the creators Gjon Camaj gave me a free copy as my race team helped develop/test and made a promo vid for it.
Others i know have used the purchase now button and had no problems. I also know someone who got a full refund so the risk is very slim. Any problems shout me and i will moan at them.

Best online racer without a doubt, it's really not all that hard to keep on top of the mods by using rfactorcentral, yes there is a flurry whenever something new is released but the best ones remain well played online while the less good just disappear. BTW with the demo you also get the BMW F1 car, the rF front end is so confusing though and not very user friendly, change it in your player settings and select the OW Challenge.

I'm a huge fan of rF. Like I've said before, of all the sims it's the one I come back to time and time again. Not just because of the mods, I just love the way it feels.

As well as the fantastic Meganes, I'm really enjoying the Lambo Gallardo mod at the moment, it feels supurb. The Aussie V8s are fantastic too. For a good old bit of dirt fun the V8 buggies and the ORR trucks are lots of fun.

The up-coming drift mod looks awesome too

Cool, cant wait to get home and get it all set-up.

Anybody fancy getting together one evening for a OCUK meet of some sort? Just bundle onto a server and have a couple of races for a laugh?

I haven't been this excited about going home to play a PC game in ages... how sad. ;)

EDIT: Holy moly, that WIP drift mod looks cool!

i quite like rfactor, its good for a quick blast in a murcielago round the nordschleife for example, but tbh, the physics are nowhere near LFS. However saying that, over at the lfs forums somebody posted about a mod to the F179 mod. By putting real tyre curves in instead of the crap they use now, it was actually so much better and counter steering actually works on it.

Bought this mainly for the Historic Rally Car Mod. It is freaking awesome. You need a decent wheel to play well though. Theres nothing like hooning an RS200 round Castle Combe :D Haven't managed to play online but I enjoy just going round a track improving times and getting better and better. Maybe we could arrange some sort of race of forum members :D

From a video it was very hard to tell the difference :p LFS just feels weak to me dont know what it is, maybe its a lack of tracks or the way its always Beta.

Are there AI opponents when offline?

Anybody had any problems getting the mods installed? I tried installing the F1 2005 season and the F1 1979 mods, but neither seem to work properly. The f12005 gives me the cars but not the tracks, and the 1979 mod doesnt give me anything at all.

Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong?
