RIAA now say ripping CDs to iPods is illegal

tbh, I'm never going to buy a CD again if this is the case
why bother?
infact why bother downloading then from Itunes etc as this kinda insinuates going EITHER way is bad, so thats no more downloads to put on CD to play in my car, looks like they get you COMMING and GOING!

what a bunch of plonkers

"Recording Industry Association of America".
We're not in America.
Stuff them.

Maybe people will notice if I say it in bigger text.

they also "look after" allot of the artists we listen to over here, and have a huge influence over the BPI (British Phonographic Industry)

Having said afaik its never been legal to make backup copys of media, inc music. This includes copying cds to put them onto mp3 players

not too bothered, as the chances of this being enforceable if european bodies made a similar statement are slim to none, in my opinion. It does seem a ridiculous thing to be saying though, they should be encouraging people to buy cds to rip to their ipods, given the popularity of the ipod these days.

There are music systems that allow direct ripping of CDs to mp3 players.. I guess that makes them illegal too?
There has never been the right to do this in the uk ("Media shifting").

I swear it was on the gadget show... Maybe its for "home made Cds of your own music" which was probably created in digital format to write on a cd, only to turn it back into mp3 format... Logic gone haywire

Wow some organisation of America wishes to bend and change the rules, wow they're not the first.

So mini disks, that are blank and designed for mini disk players are illegal? After all its ripping a CD to a mini disk for personal use...

Nope, the UK has no fair use laws for music.

It's always been illegal in the UK to rip a CD to your HD, it's just never really been enforced.

I hope it never will become enforceable then. Or maybe the police will start stopping us on the streets and inspecting the contents of everyones mp3 players...

Yamaha sell a Music HD/CD player thing. It's sole purpose is loading your CD collection onto it.

I assume then it is not illegal to buy the product. Just to use it.

It's never been legal in this country to transfer music from one medium to the other. Remember making compilation tapes when you were younger? Illegal. Copying CD's onto tape to listen to in your car? Illegal. Ripping CD's to your PC for easy listening? Illegal. They're stupid laws, but they're laws nonetheless. Whether any law enforcement agency in this country would ever try to enforce those laws is another matter.

Yeh, I think we've got the point that its illegal :p. The important thing now is whether they would enforce the law.
How? Taking our iPods for a scan? Borrowing our hard drives for a few weeks while they ascertain we haven't been ripping CDs?

They would never do it. Even if they were to try, I'd like to see them wade through millions of PCs.
