What do you think of comedian Ricky Gervais?

Do you love him or hate him?

I started out hating him but after listening to the podcasts I quite like him now.

:)

The character stuff he's done on TV does nothing for me (The Office, Derek, Extras), but I find his standup and podcast stuff much funnier. He's no Stewart Lee, but I like his acerbic standup.

We've had this thread before, I'm sure.

He's ok. The Office is exceptional, but most of his other stuff isn't nearly as good, not even close.

I remember he came on stage at the live8 thing a few years back, crowd went totally dead and he had to resort to doing that little dance from the office to get any kind of response from them.

So yeah, about as funny as week long diarrhea.

I like his film work rather than his shows. Ghost Town was superb as was The Invention Of Lying.

One trick pony. Everything he does seems to be based on David Brent.

Derek based on Brent?
Extras based on Brent?
The early podcasts based on Brent?
An Idiot Abroad based on Brent?
and so on ............................

It sounds like you've only seen The Office with David Brent in it.

I love most of the things he does, though I think anyone who's a true fan will recognise Stephen Merchant as at least half if not more of what made him so popular. Anything with Merchant involved is wonderfully subtle and very tongue in cheek, where Ricky on his own seems a lot more obvious. Still funny, but the partnership between them makes them an almost unrivalled comedy duo imo.

When Pilkington get's involved... well, that's a different story. The XFM shows are quite simply the greatest things ever committed to recording. It shows just how quick whited and funny the two of them are.

I thought "An idiot abroad" was genuine and the little interviews between all 3 of them were golden. But then i found that Pilkingtons 'character' had been around for years and has been honed quite well.
Still....it looked believable, as does Ricky's attempt to make his acting look like no-acting if you get what i mean; almost ad-lbbed.
He rocketed up in my estimation when he became outspoken about animal cruelty etc and calling out the game hunters on facebook.

Pilkington isn't a 'character' in as much as Gervais and Merchant pull the strings from behind the curtain. He's genuinely like that. If you listen to the old XFM shows you can literally hear how he himself is changed into am ignorant/stupid/angry man. There constant pestering and bullying literally changed him. He really does have a character arc.

I've no doubt that he plays it up a touch for the cameras, but I've no doubt he was pretty much like that in every day life. Not so much now he's got used to the limelight.

Some of his stuff has been very good, but as for him as an individual, I think he's a complete tool.

Too loud for his own and everyone else's good.
