Dad and I did a trip around Europe on a 1958 Velocette Venom, it only broke down 17 times. Contender? 
Was bloody good fun though. None of the breakages were bad and could all be repaired with spares that were in the panniers of our bike or someone elses, or temporarily repaired with tape.
In many ways I think it would have been less of an adventure if it went smoothly.
