So, said bike:

1. Is not in my name
2. Has tax
3. Has mot
4. Is Not insured by anyone
5. Is parked off road

I have fully comp insurance and I can ride any bike third party if i have permission from the owner.

Can i ride the said bike? Or should it be sorn in this state?

As above, if it's taxed, it should be insured. If not insured, it should be SORN'ed.

And it must be insured to be ridden on the road, therefore you can't ride it under the 'riding other bikes' part of your insurance. Get caught (it'll ping up on ANPR as uninsured) and you'll be buggered.

Tell your mate to either SORN the bike (£80 fine if they don't) or insure it. If they insure it you'll be able to ride it.

You CANNOT ride an uninsured bike. The third party basis clause states 'in emergencies only', and also says the vehicle you would be using would already be insured by someone else.

Otherwise you could have fully comp on a 125 and be insured to ride a H2R on 3rd party basis, deliberately not insuring the H2R - see what I mean?

edit: The above applies to a standard policy. Commercial policies can be/are different

Check your insurance policy. Some state that you can ride/drive any other vehicle, some additionally state that vehicle must be insured.

Insurance company can't refuse to payout a third party claim on an otherwise uninsured bike if they didn't include that as an exclusion on the policy - ergo you are insured.

Of course, if you park up and leave the bike, it will then be uninsured. And you'll want to carry proof of insurance to show to any police who pull you over for riding an uninsured vehicle.

There's also the question of whether you could reasonably know whether someone else's bike is insured or not - is the exclusion enforceable? (No idea if this has been tested)

I'm pretty sure all normal personal policies state the bike must be insured by someone else before your ride other bikes conditions are met.

It is also up to the rider/driver to ensure the vehicle is properly taxed/insured/mot and generally road worthy before using it ignorance is not a defence.

Based on my extensive watching of "Police ...." shows on Five :D I'm pretty certain that in order for someone to use another's vehicle, said vehicle must be insured first.

I thought you only sorn your vehicle/bike if you don't want to tax it and you're keeping it on a drive/garage?

It can sit on the road with tax but no insurance?
