Rift and Vive compared

So what's the 'killer app' for VR right now? I have budget for a Rift but haven't seen anything to make me drop my pennies right now I have to say - maybe because I've not actually used one. However if they produced an F1 game with Rift support I'd sell the kids tomorrow to get it. :)

Seated game I say would be Dirt Rally. By far the best experience on the Rift I have had and this is with the 360 pad, with a wheel it would be much better

That's interesting. I've tried both Rift (CV) and Vive and found the Vive to be instantly massively immersive, but with the Rift I felt like I was wearing some narrow thing on my eyes and had to make myself feel it was real. With the Vive despite the front heavy awkward weight I instantly forgot I was in a simulator. It's all so bright I just felt like it was there.

Obviously with the room scale there is zero contest for me. Has to be vive. But the question is do I wait for the Touch controllers for Oculus. Even though it *can* do roomscale there's a massive difference between "can technically do but Oculus aren't pushing devs to do it" and "built to do it so it just does", which is what the Vive is.

So I think I'll go Vive.

Agree with samion - I got the Vive to have the best room-scale experience possible, and it delivers (and then some!). The Rift is good, but it was designed for seated experiences with the room-scale stuff coming as an afterthought. I'm sure it can do it, but how practical it is to set up and well it works we'll have to wait and see (no, binary finger gestures don't excite me...).

What's crazy is that we now have 3 principal VR solutions, but they seem to have distinctly different strengths.

Yeah I've had (I'm sure we all have) a lot of experience with things that are made for one thing but *can* be used for another. As a musician many audio apps spring to mind over the years and I've made the mistake of using them in a way other than intended to save money, but it doesn't work out great.

It's obviously very similar to the fighting aspect in Elite Dangerous but the problem with ED is that there are too many buttons and controls which when you can't see your hands is a bit of a problem.

Voice attack FTW.

Agreed - voice attack works very well with the built in mic on the rift.

Check out HCS voicepacks for elite - they make it very simple to get up and running http://www.hcsvoicepacks.com/

Its very simple to use without buying extra voice packs as well. If you are thinking of buying VA its simplicity itself to bind keys, custom sounds, custom key configuration (e.g. i have a macro for requesting docking) to whatever button you like.

I had a Vive for a couple of weeks 3 months ago. I returned it. Similar reasons as mentioned above. I also found one of the lighthouses in particular made a really high pitch whine noise - which was pretty irritating.

Generally though I just found the resolution too poor. Things didn't look sharp enough, it was like going back to 1024 monitor resolution. For reference I'm currently using a X34 3440x1440 which is quite tasty. The immersion with the Vive on something like Project Cars with my wheel was awesome but with better resolution would be mega. I think the next gen will be the one to get - but will no doubt need monster graphics card etc.

I don't have space for full room and anyway I will mostly use for racing. I was really hyped up about VR 6 months ago but I've switched off a bit more recently, still doesn't seem to be the killer games there. I'm tempted to get and try a Rift though.

This is my view so don't take it too seriously. I have just purchased a Oculus Rift from John Lewis in London. And I can say it is truly amazing, words can not describe the experience of VR. Looking forward to the Rift hand controllers. I have had 2 demos of the HTC Vive. Both the Rift and Vive are the same as far as video quality VR experience. What I DID notice was comfort. The Rift is by far MORE comfortable to wear than the Vive. I could wear the Rift for hours, but the Vive, I was glad to remove it after the 20 minute demos! It is too heavy and uncomfortable to wear, very fiddly to adjust, and it feels as if it will fall off, and on top of that is the headphones. The Rift comes with very light built in headphones, and the headset is very easy to adjust. The setup was a breeze. I know the HTC Vive is more supported, and with room-scale and hand controllers. But in my strongest view, the Oculus Rift is my choice of VR headsets.

Thanks for this, very helpful:)
