Rig For Crysis

I bought a system on Friday (last week) from Overclockers. It was on special offer so I saved 300 pounds and considering what the spec was it was awesome value.

- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 GO 2.40GHz Quad Core CPU Overclocked too a minimum of 3.00GHz and beyond.
- Tuniq Tower 120 Pro Blue LED Intel approved cooler
- Arctic Silver 5 Heatsink compound professionally hand installed by our technicians
- Asus Striker Extreme nForce 680 SLi (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- Award winning OCZ 2GB PC2-8500 CAS5 (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit (Overclocked at 1000MHz+) (Note when upgrading to 4GB overclock drops to 2.80GHz on CPU)
- 500GB Western Digital 16MB Cache SATA-2 Hard Drive
- 2x NVIDIA 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 VIVO HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) DirectX 10 Graphics Card configured in SLI
- Pioneer 112DBK 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black)
- Antec NINE HUNDRED Gamers ATX Case
- OCZ 1010W Next Generation Power Supply

It will cost yu 1861 with windows 64bit vista and 4gig of ram but considering what you get and when comparing to every other online retailer out there, this is simply the best. Got this with the Samsung 24 inch too w00t.

as mentioned above you want a x38 board, also the ram is another thing you may want to consider, could you get 2 sticks of 2gig ram to make the 4gig? that way u still have room to upgrade the ram more at a later date.

If you are going to get 4GB of RAM don't bother getting a 32bit edition of Vista, it will only recognise about 3gb of it, maybe less.

What do you mean, "maybe less". You just making this up as you go along?

Vista 32 supports a maximum of 3.25GB.

If your going to want to play crysis maxed out - then my suggestion would be to wait until its released and let people report back on these forums to see what to buy to get the best possible result for playing crysis.

Should save yourself a fair few quid too :)

Given the patchy state of DX10 graphics drivers that a lot of money to spend on an older graphics card, wait to see the next refresh from ATI and Nvidia.

If we are luck Crysis might benefit from SLI/ crossfire. CPU is unlikley to be the limiting factor at 'max' settings.

I'm toying with whether to pre-order this or not myself. Just spotted the Recommended System Requirements:

Windows XP / Vista
2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
2.0GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS/640 or equivalent

Does this mean my 8800GTS 320MB is gonna struggle somewhat?
Also wondered which is more effective - 1 640mb card or 2x320mb in SLI? I.E. which setup is likely to get a higher benchmark score?

1 gtx is probably better than gts sli.

But I cant afford one :(
I settled for an 8800GTS 320 on this build as thats all I could afford, so itd be easier to save up for another to add to it now, rather than saving up whats needed for a GTX.

Little bit off topic but the Thermaltake Ultra Extreme do you have to access the back of the mobo, i.e. screw 4 pins at the back of the mobo or is it all installed from the top like the stock Intel heatsinks?

yeh stick with ddr2 and hounestly for my oppinion dont bye a hybrid bored either stick with a ddr2 only bored as by the time you buy ddr3 your bored that kept you future proof wont support the top speed ddr3 and if you want that your naffed and need a new bored anyway.
That's a very good point actually. I've just bought a Gigabyte board that supports DDR2 as well as DDR3. I was thinking wait until DDR3 drops in price & then I can get that. But as you say by the time that happens I could well be looking at a new build anyway!

As for Crysis - The general concensus seems to be that it will require an absolutely mammoth rig to run. While I'm sure that's true to get the best out of surely it will be capable of running on much lesser rigs? Otherwise who are Crytek making this game for? People that spend more on their rigs than most would a decent car?!

It would seem a bit daft that Crytek would make a game that, performance wise, is beyond the realm of all but the most hardened PC builder, overclocker or gamer that has more money than sense! (no offence intended to anyone who might be spending such amounts on kit, building a PC ........ and then overclocking the Hell out of it! Good luck to yous ;))

Whynot sell 1 gts and then with your money for the 2nd gts you would have enough for a gtx..which would be far more beneficial then 2 gts'. And also, i would rather 2x320 then 1x640, as the 320 sometimes outperforms the 640, or is on par at lower resolutions anyway.

Thats a fair point and one I totally overlooked! lol
I'll see how money pans out over next few months, and also see how much I could get for my 2nd hand 8800GTS.
Sadly its the car MOT in December of all months that is a priority atm. *sulks* If it passes It'll be sooner rather than later LOL

The only reason i chose the 32bit version of vista is because i have heard people having loads of problems with drivers for the 64bit version, not that i am saying that the 32bit version does not have its own problems.

I decided to go with 4 gigs of RAM because it would mean i could upgrade to a 64bit OS and not have to bother with buying more RAM.

I don't want to go raid just don't like the idea and i don't know what its like to setup but i cant imagine it is to easy?

So with all your comments mind how does this look?

I am guessing OCing would work well with the setup but i have never OCed before so can anyone point me to any good guides? Same with the raid if its not to hard i will consider it.

Thanks again bullet-time

Why do you need 2 GTX?

SLI does not offer double the performance. You also do not need 8500 rated memory, thats an overkill. 6400 will be more than fine.

Ditch 1 of the GTX's the X38 chipset doesn't support SLi (just crossfire), at least not officially. You may be able to get it working via some dodgy old drivers but it's certainly not recommended.

Also as stated in an earlier post the RAM is a bit unneccersary, go with the cheaper Geil, good memory half the price.

Add another hard drive and you're there, RAID is a piece of cake to set up and you don't even need to install the drivers on installation with Vista, as long as you've set up your raid pack everything will go on just fine.
If you want me to walk you through setting the RAID up give me a PM, it really is quite easy once you know how.

Here's what I would go with. I have no budget to work with but i'm presuming the cheaper the better. I've added the tuniq tower as it's cheap at the moment and it should enable you to overclock your quad up to 3ghz with no overheating probs whatsoever, you will however need to do a quick hacksaw job on it to make it fit on the board.;)

personaly i would go for a different graphics card, i just dont like the short warrenty on the ocuk cards, i would prefer a bfg one, bit more expensive, but a lifetime warrenty, worth it imo.
