Has anyone else made the mistake of buying one of these? It simply doesn't work and it's getting really annoying that Ring don't really seem to understand (or would rather ignore) that there's an issue.

The bottom line is, if you have motion detection turned on, the doorbell wont do anything the first time you press it.

Turn of motion detection and it works reasonably well. You might still have to wait 10 seconds for the Chime (WiFi bell indoors) to actually ring, but at least you'll know someone is at the door!

It took around 40 minutes on live chat and they agreed to send me out a new one, but this one behaves exactly the same as the last one, so surely it's a design fault. How can no-one else have this problem?

It is being suggested to hard wire it, so when I get back from holiday, I'll do some testing with it indoors, before drilling holes for power. I guess if it works on 'mains' then it's okay, but still very annoying right now.

I've got one and it works really well? Mine is hard wired in via the original doorbell/transformer though. It takes a couple of seconds from the real doorbell ringing to the app reacting but the people at the door have generally been picked up by the motion detection by then anyway so I already know they are coming.

I notice you have a Sony phone. have you got any power saving features like Stamina turned on? I'm using a Nexus 6P and my partner has a One Plus X and we find it works well on both.

It's honestly one of my best, if not my best purchase of 2016. I go away quite a lot so it gives my partner peace of mind, it's also brilliant for deliveries, I can tell the person to deliver next door if I'm not in.

Edit: I just timed it and it was under 2 seconds for the app to alert me when I pressed the bell.

It's not even really about the app and notifications. The doorbell itself doesn't actually ring...

It looks like I need to hard wire it for it to work then I guess.

I just saw your video and that is weird, as soon as I press mine the button makes a noise (I wish it didn't, I have an inside doorbell!). Maybe without wired power it takes time to wake up but I'm pretty sure I tested mine on my desk before and it was fine.

Also yours seems to make a different noise to mine, similar but sounds weird. I'll try and upload a video tomorrow.

How long did you leave it on your desk before pressing though? If I muck about with mine, it will be fine when I press it. Put it back on the door, 2 hours later it's asleep...

My colleague has one, it's not the sort of thing I'd buy. He thinks it is the best thing since sliced bread.

I didn't leave it at all, unpacked it, set it up and pressed it then wired it in. Definitely sounds like some kind of power saving issue when it's not wired then. Have you had a look through the Amazon reviews to see if anyone has had similar?

interesting.

My front door is onto a main road, I guess that would mean the motion detection would be always on in effect?

You can turn off motion detection if you want. And yes if they are stolen they are worthless as they just blacklist the nicked device, and they will send you a new one.

I've just ordered a second one, they are down to £139 on Amazon at the moment and I have another doorbell button wired on the side of the house so it will make a good security camera/second doorbell there.

I'm thinking of getting the Pro version of this. How are people getting on their their Rings? Has there been any firmware updates recently which have addressed the various issues I've read about?

I wouldn't get the Pro to be honest, I have one (along with two Ring doorbells and a stick up camera) but it has the following downsides and I've gone back to the standard Ring:

- No battery so if you have a power cut it doesn't work
- Very finnicky about the power being supplied to it, lots of wifi issues reported in forums because of this
- Doesn't ring the 'standard' doorbell immediately unlike the normal version

The only upsides are a better res (I find 720p enough on the standard version) and the zones you can select. I have zero problems with the standard Rings and camera, but the Pro feels like an unfinished product to me.

I got a firmware update that fixed any issues I had with mine. Seems to last around 2 months on battery (if not longer) which is plenty for me.

He's talking about the Pro version though, which doesn't have a battery, has to be hard wired and is quite different. I'd go for the standard Ring have like you personally (although hard wired as well, it still makes a big difference to latency even with the latest firmware).

I've just purchased the pro version. If the power goes off then I have bigger problems (no internet). I would have to wire up the standard version anyway as it wouldn't work for me to keep taking it off to recharge. Also a while back people were complaining that the standard version on battery was slow to respond. This version comes with a transformer for the consumer unit. The people who I've seen with problems are those with existing transformers which don't meet the power requirements.

One feature that wasn't apparent before I purchased it is that you can assign a ringtone specifically for motion sensor activity. So out of the box it plays a windchime sound when motion is detected and a ring sound when someone presses the button. This may be a moot point if the motion detection is poor.

So far so good. The only problem I have had is with the included "Chime" which is the ringer which plugs into a mains socket. One of them is included in the package. The problem I encountered is the app shows an error message when changing ringtones. The ringtone still gets changed and you can test the ring from the app but I get an error. Nothing major.
